Pornography entered the digital age alongside the internet in the early 90s. Since then, it has become (for better or worse) a staple of the web. It continues to be a dynamic industry – there are plenty of places for technology to take this form of entertainment.
For example, companies have begun exploring using virtual reality (VR) to enhance user experience. But that’s not all. One of the most popular porn sites on the internet is taking interactivity to new heights.
PornHub is partnering with interactive porn studio Ufeel.tv to open up a section of their website dedicated to clips that interact with special sex toys for a truly immersive experience. The clips are compatible with two devices, the Kiiroo Onyx and Fleshlight Launch. The site has also promised to offer VR-optimized videos, allowing for absolute teledildonics immersion.
According to Engadget’s review of the Launch material, the majority of the videos available do not cater to a diverse demographic. Although the promise of future inclusion of female-friendly videos does give hope for that diversity to strengthen.
There’s no telling what these developments portend for the future of intimacy. Could these and similar devices lead to a future where sexual activity is digital, like a scene from some schlocky 90s sci-fi movie? While that is highly unlikely, this could more realistically allow for couples to still be intimate even at long distances.
While it may be uncomfortable in some cultures to discuss sex openly, there is plenty to ponder on how technology will interact with one of the most basic of human needs and desires. The future of sex is truly upon us.
