Are you up to the challenge?

Scrap the Screen

Let’s be honest: We all spend way too much time on our phones. That’s why one company is offering $2,400 to those brave enough to part with their screens for an entire day.

Reviews.org, a home products and services review website, put out a call for its “2021 Digital Detox Challenge” where participants can win up to $2,400 if they can go an entire 24 hours without screens, according to CNN

"If you've got the desire to ditch your devices for a day but still need to get paid, this is the perfect opportunity for you," the company said on its website. "If that seems too easy, you're probably not the one who needs the detox, so you should refer your phone-addicted friends and family instead."

Do You Have What It Takes?

If you think you’re up to the challenge, apply on its website by March 26, 2021 at 5:00pm MST.

Just keep in mind that the full list of verboten items might make even the most luddite of you nervous. The list includes no cell phones, televisions, gaming devices, computers and laptops, smart watches and other wearables, and smart home devices like Amazon Alexa and even your Roomba.

Screen Addiction

The challenge is a fun way to bring awareness to a growing and persistent problem of the digital age: Our overdependence and addiction to phones and other digital devices.

A recent survey by Reviews.org found that 56.4 percent of people consider themselves to be "somewhat" addicted to their phone. An over-reliance on smartphones has been shown to impact our brains much in the same way that drug use does, according to a study in the journal Addictive Behaviors. There’s also some evidence that suggests it is changing children’s brains in ways scientists don’t fully understand yet.

So even if you don’t get chosen for the $2,400 challenge, it might be a good idea to take part in it anyway and give your mind a rest from screens. Don’t worry, the memes will be there when you get back.
