Google has been one of the first and one of the most senior in the companies developing autonomous driving technology. But "another Google" is looking to catch up in the field.

Baidu, the Chinese search engine giant, has just received the green light to test its self-driving cars in the streets of California.

The California DMV has issued the tech giant an Autonomous Vehicle Testing Permit. This comes just after Baidu made a call for researchers for its US division. It plans to field a 100-man research team in the US.

The company has been in the self-driving game for quite some time, testing its cars in Chinese roads since December.

It has focused of two key technologies, according to Business Insider. These are deep learning AI for optimal image sensing and recognition and better HD mapping systems.
