While some are actually predicting a future without traffic lights due to smart cars, others are still busy at work trying to improve them. Case in point, a city in Germany tried putting traffic lights in pavement for inattentive smartphone users.

And there is something even better.

The Australian state of New South Wales wants to install ground-based traffic lights at key crosswalks in Sydney, planning a trial run this December. Target demographic: Also Smartphone users.

The initiative is part of the Towards Zero advertising campaign, which aims to highlight the human impact of crashes and road fatalities. In 2015, 61 pedestrians were killed on NSW roads — a 49 percent increase from 2014.

This is why the local government has earmarked $250,000 for the six-month trial run. The lights are expected to be installed in five places in Sydney's central business district.
