This winter has been pretty cold. And as we all know, things tend to act a little strange when it gets really cold out.  For example, boiling water that is thrown into the air turns into snow almost instantaneously. And as these images from Nantucket reveal, the extreme cold can also cause waves to freeze.

Jonathan Nimerfroh, who is a Nantucket-based photographer, took these images of waves coming ashore that contained quite a bit of ice. The results are rather spectacular. Perhaps not groundbreaking science, but an awesome view of our planet all the same.
