Lab-Grown Meat Startup May Add Thanksgiving Turkey to the Menu

The future of food is cruelty-free.

Although some people may be reluctant to eat anything grown in a petri dish, “clean meat” may just be the future of food: they’re cruelty-free, environment-friendly, and safer from contaminants. San Francisco-based startup Memphis Meats plans to feed the world with meat grown in the lab from harvested animal cells. They have successfully grown (and taste-tested) beef, and are currently considering adding more to the menu, with Thanksgiving turkey possibly making the list.

“The company will start with ground meats, but formed meats are on the roadmap, and could be chicken breast, steak, and even a whole turkey if the demand is there,” a company spokesperson told TechCrunch.

They say that the current production method of meat is becoming unsustainable not only because of the number of livestock that needs to be slaughtered, but also due to the environmental costs of producing meat as well as the risks of contamination it entails.

They have launched an Indiegogo campaign to help move their project forward, which they hope will be ready for the market in the next five years. As of last checking, they have raised over $54,000 from over 750 backers with 23 days left of their campaign.
