Technology is almost always controversial. We never know whether or not it is really feasible until it is created. Then, once it is made, we don't know how it is going to impact society until decades after it is introduced. And of course, we often debate whether it should be introduced at all.
Chances are, we won't be able to really make effective predictions until we come up with a way to travel through time, which isn't going to happen any time soon.
