As we continue on our path towards a potential future filled with tireless humanoid robots staffing factory floors, companies are looking to solve a major pain point of the tech: a limited battery life.
Chinese company UBTECH <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHP1WGlw5Wk">recently showed off</a> its bipedal Walker S2 robot contorting its arms to hot swap one of its battery packs — a "world's first," seemingly — which means the 95-pound automaton could technically work 24 hours a day, an integral part of <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/cars/technology/2025/07/22/china-dark-factories-auto-industry-what-to-know/85307400007/">fully automated "dark factories</a>" that never need to keep the lights on.
Video footage shows the robot walking up to a rack of swappable batteries. After unnaturally flipping its arms around, the automaton replaces one of its two battery packs in its back before going on its merry way.
It's an impressive demo that raises some thorny questions surrounding the role of human workers in a robot-dominated future. They can already <a href="https://futurism.com/wild-video-humanoid-robot-preparing-breakfast">prepare elaborate breakfasts</a> and <a href="https://futurism.com/the-byte/figure-robot-sort-packages-video">deftly sort packages</a>. If they don't even need us to swap their batteries, what other responsibilities could soon be on the chopping block?

Earlier this year, more than 200 staffers at Elon Musk's AI startup xAI were asked to have their faces recorded while speaking to their coworkers.
According to internal documents and Slack messages <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/xai-grok-training-facial-expressions-skippy-employees-react-2025-7">obtained by Business Insider</a>, some employees were taken aback after being asked to take part in a project called "Skippy," the goal of which was to train the company's <a href="https://futurism.com/openai-anthropic-xai-grok-scandal">Hitler-loving AI chatbot</a>, Grok, on their facial expressions.
It remains unclear whether project Skippy was in any way related to xAI's "companions," including a thirst trap goth anime girl <a class="underline hover:text-futurism hover:no-underline transition-all duration-200 ease-in-out" href="https://futurism.com/exploitation-group-ai-waifu">dubbed Ani</a>, an extremely vulgar red panda <a class="underline hover:text-futurism hover:no-underline transition-all duration-200 ease-in-out" href="https://futurism.com/elon-musk-grok-goth-anime-waifu">named Bad Rudi</a>, and Valentine, a male persona that <a href="https://futurism.com/elon-musk-thirst-trap-women">looks suspiciously like 2012 Musk in a costume</a>.
Even long before the personas were publicly announced, the effort proved controversial enough for some staffers to opt out altogether, according to BI, showing how Musk's controversial startup is starting to alienate even its own workers.
The news comes weeks after Grok shocked the world by abruptly <a class="underline hover:text-the-byte hover:no-underline transition-all duration-200 ease-in-out" href="https://futurism.com/grok-mocks-developers-racist-posts">turning into a full-blown Nazi</a> on X, refering to itself as "MechaHitler" while making outrageously bigoted claims about Black and Jewish people.
Not long after, xAI "<a href="https://x.com/grok/status/1943916977481036128">deeply" apologized</a> for the chatbot's "horrific behavior."
Months prior, staffers who had been enrolled in project Skippy were asking some tough questions about how recordings of their face would be used, citing privacy concerns.
"My general concern is if you're able to use my likeness and give it that sublikeness, could my face be used to say something I never said?" one worker said during an introductory session, as quoted by BI.
However, a consent form staffers were required to sign pointed out that the data would exclusively be used for training purposes, and "not to create a digital version of you."
Staffers were asked to be recorded while having 15- to 30-minute chats with their peers and answering some vaguely sociopathic-sounding questions, including how to "secretly manipulate people to get your way" or whether they would "ever date someone with a kid or kids."
The whole thing gets even more complicated after Grok's Nazi meltdown and xAI's deployment of its companions.
Could Ani's facial expressions be rooted in recordings of xAI employees' faces? Is the startup's undressing anime "waifu" literally being trained on its own staff?
There are plenty of reasons why employees shouldn't be taking their bosses at their word. Musk's businesses have long had a reputation for refusing to play it safe, resulting in a hostile working environment often marked by <a href="https://futurism.com/spacex-sued-again-sexual-harassment">sexual harassment</a> and rampant <a href="https://futurism.com/tesla-racist-graffiti-discrimination-lawsuit">racism</a>.

Leaked Documents Show xAI Employees Were Alarmed by Something They Were Asked to Do at Elon Musk's AI Startup

In the so-called "<a href="https://www.anthropic.com/news/claudes-constitution">constitution</a>" for its chatbot Claude, AI company Anthropic claims that it's committed to principles based on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, instructing its chatbot to prioritize freedom, equality, freedom of thought, and adequate standards of living in its responses.
Anthropic has long <a href="https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/364384/its-practically-impossible-to-run-a-big-ai-company-ethically">attempted to distinguish itself</a> as putting safety first. The firm was founded by former OpenAI members, with a commitment to advancing AI ethically and responsibly.
But four years on, the company's human leaders are now singing a dramatically different tune. As <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/anthropic-dario-amodei-gulf-state-leaked-memo/">Wired reports</a>, CEO Dario Amodei acknowledged in a Slack message that taking funding from Middle East leaders — which Anthropic is poised to do, with entreaties to the United Arab Emirates and Qatar — would line the pockets of "dictators."
"This is a real downside and I'm not thrilled about it," Amodei wrote. "Unfortunately, I think ‘No bad person should ever benefit from our success’ is a pretty difficult principle to run a business on."
Amodei's remarks highlight how even AI companies that banked on ethical practices are increasingly abandoning those goals as they race to secure funding for enormous — and incredibly environmentally damaging — AI infrastructure expansion projects.
Even Anthropic, which has long touted itself as a more ethical alternative to the likes of OpenAI, is giving in to the temptation of accepting Gulf State money.
That's despite <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2024/03/22/anthropic-lining-up-a-new-slate-of-investors-ruled-out-saudi-arabia.html">Amodei citing national security concerns</a> for denying Saudi Arabian funds last year.
In a major reversal, the CEO is seeing the dollar signs — and simply can't let his conscience win yet again.
"There is a truly giant amount of capital in the Middle East, easily $100B or more," Amodei wrote in the Slack messages, as quoted by Wired.
"If we want to stay on the frontier, we gain a very large benefit from having access to this capital," he wrote. "Without it, it is substantially harder to stay on the frontier."
Amodei tried to twist the narrative in his favor by arguing that the company was only getting money from Gulf countries, not investing to build out infrastructure there. He argued that it's "dangerous" to hand "authoritarian governments" key AI hardware.
The news comes after OpenAI announced it would be part of Trump's <a class="underline hover:text-the-byte hover:no-underline transition-all duration-200 ease-in-out" href="https://futurism.com/the-byte/trump-ai-infrastructure-deal">$500 billion AI infrastructure project</a>, dubbed Stargate. The massive venture, which is currently <a href="https://www.wsj.com/tech/ai/softbank-openai-a3dc57b4">struggling to get off the ground</a>, is being backed by the United Arab Emirates' royal family, which has an abysmal track record when it comes to human rights abuses, from <a class="underline hover:text-the-byte hover:no-underline transition-all duration-200 ease-in-out" href="https://www.amnesty.org/en/location/middle-east-and-north-africa/middle-east/united-arab-emirates/report-united-arab-emirates/">detaining prisoners of conscience</a> to the <a class="underline hover:text-the-byte hover:no-underline transition-all duration-200 ease-in-out" href="https://www.amnesty.org/en/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/mde250012010en.pdf">torture of immigrant workers</a>.
Amodei threw competing AI companies under the bus, accusing the United States of having "failed to prevent" a "race to the bottom where companies gain a lot of advantage by getting deeper and deeper in bed with the Middle East."
The horrific optics of having Anthropic take Gulf State money were apparent, with Amodei accusing the media of "always looking for hypocrisy, while also being very stupid and therefore having a poor understanding of substantive issues."
Given the <a href="https://bsky.app/profile/jeffjarvis.bsky.social/post/3lukhjlliss2v">negative blowback</a> following the leak of his memo, Amodei appears to have accurately predicted the resulting "comms headache."
In the same breath, he revealed that his AI company had a great interest in serving the Middle East "commercially," which he believes is a "pure positive as long as we don't build data centers there and as long as we enforce our [acceptable use policy]."
The puzzling memo paints a picture of an AI industry caught between a rock and a hard place. As ambitions continue to grow, companies are throwing out the rulebook as they desperately try to lock down enough funding to realize their megalomaniac dreams.
Even Anthropic, once seen as a more carefully realized alternative to OpenAI, has fallen to the temptation of a virtually endless stream of funding from the Middle East, marking the beginning of a new chapter — ethics be damned.

Leaked Slack Messages Show CEO of "Ethical AI" Startup Anthropic Saying It's Okay to Benefit Dictators

SpaceX is nine full-scale test launches into developing its enormous, nearly 400-feet-tall Starship, the most powerful rocket ever built.
Over the last two and a half years, we've seen over <a href="https://futurism.com/the-byte/starship-explosion-spacex">half a dozen spectacular explosions</a>. Two launches earlier this year sent <a href="https://futurism.com/spacex-starship-explodes-debris">massive streaks of debris</a> hurtling over the Turks and Caicos Islands, prompting airspace closures. Its <a href="https://futurism.com/elon-musk-starship-improvements-failure">most recent test in May</a> ended in an uncontrolled splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico after helplessly spinning on its axis and suffering fuel leaks.
The stakes are incredibly high for the Elon Musk-led space firm, which has garnered a reputation for its unusually aggressive iterative design philosophy. Its billionaire founder has made Starship the key component of his endeavor to send humans to Mars, and it also happens to be the linchpin of SpaceX's future plans for its Starlink satellite network — the major driver of revenue, on which he's staking the company's future — which will require the launching of thousands of satellites each year.
But Starship's repeated test launch failures are forcing experts to ask tough questions about the super-heavy launch platform's actual viability, as <a href="https://nymag.com/intelligencer/article/elon-musk-spacex-starship-doomed.html">New York Magazine reports</a>. Will Starship ever get off the ground, do its job, and make it back down in one piece? What about NASA's plans to tap the rocket for its upcoming Moon landing? Could the project have been doomed from the start?
"The question is not, 'Can you build an upper stage that is reusable with high-performance rocket engines?'" Reflect Orbital chief engineer Charlie Garcia told NYMag. "The question is, 'Can you do it cost-effectively, and can you do it with quick reusability turnaround?'"
If Musk's characteristically boisterous predictions are anything to go by, Starship could have an extremely quick turnaround time between launches thanks to a "<a href="https://futurism.com/the-byte/spacex-caught-starship-booster-chopsticks-tower">Mechazilla" tower</a> that catches both its booster and upper stage.
But history has already shown how reality could greatly diverge from those dreams. Case in point: NASA's Space Shuttle.
"I remember reading a book in the 1970s about how the space shuttle would be flying every two weeks and cost low hundreds of dollars per pound to orbit," Paragon Space Development Corporation cofounder Grant Anderson told NYMag. "It never did that, obviously."
SpaceX's latest Starship launch was seen by many as a step backward, even after previous failures. The company determined that a <a href="https://www.space.com/space-exploration/launches-spacecraft/spacex-will-launch-next-starship-flight-in-about-3-weeks-elon-musk-says">nitrogen tank in the ship's nosecone had failed</a>, in contrast to the times its predecessors <a href="https://futurism.com/the-byte/spacex-test-flight-starship-explosion-ocean">gently lowered themselves</a> into the ocean.
Flight 7 and 8 also both experienced issues around the same time in their respective launches, prompting concerns.
"If you have a failure at the same stage twice for the same reason, and they can’t solve the problem, that’s an indication that there’s a design flaw that’s more than just an 'Oops!'" Anderson told NYMag.
All eyes will be on SpaceX in the coming weeks. Musk has promised that the next Starship test launch — the tenth overall — will <a href="https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1944819507954082236?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">take place sometime in early August</a>. Giving reassurance is the rocket's booster, which has repeatedly made it back to the launch pad in one piece after being caught by SpaceX's "chopstick" arms-wielding launch tower.
Yet nobody knows how SpaceX's Starship will fare from here. Have the last couple of years been leading up to nothing, if critics are to be believed, or could Starship fulfill Musk's dreams of delivering humans to the Moon, Mars, and potentially beyond?
SpaceX still has a lot to prove — and the time is quickly running out with each dramatic explosion.

Elon Now Facing the Possibility That SpaceX Will Never Get Starship Working

Hundreds of current and former NASA employees have signed an open letter of dissent against Trump's proposed cuts at the agency — and they're sounding the alarm on the safety of its astronauts in an ominous way.
"The last six months have seen rapid and wasteful changes which have undermined our mission and caused catastrophic impacts on NASA's workforce," the letter states, addressed to interim administrator Sean Duffy.
In total, 287 current and former employees have signed the document, at least four of whom are astronauts, <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-025-02296-1">according to Nature</a>. In the era of Trump's <a href="https://www.npr.org/2025/04/29/nx-s1-5327518/donald-trump-100-days-retribution-threats">retribution-driven politics</a>, 156 chose to remain anonymous. 
A key theme in the letter is that the administration's policies "compromise human safety." It's a broad claim that gets narrowed into the tip of a blade when it invokes the specter of one of NASA's deadliest catastrophes.
"The culture of organizational silence promoted at NASA over the last six months already represents a dangerous turn away from the lessons learned following the Columbia disaster," the letter warns.
The Columbia disaster occurred on February 1, 2003, when a Space Shuttle carrying seven astronauts disintegrated upon reentering the Earth's atmosphere, killing everyone onboard. The letter's implications are unmistakable: that astronauts could die.
Further underscoring the grave stakes, the document has been submitted as a "formal dissent": an official procedure for voicing disagreement that was implemented, the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/07/21/science/nasa-formal-dissent-letter-trump.html">New York Times notes</a>, in the wake of the Challenger and Columbia disasters.
The Trump administration has threatened to slash nearly half of NASA's $7.3 billion science budget next year, and its overall budget of $18.8 billion by nearly a quarter. It has already cut nearly $118 million in NASA grants and contracts, according to a <a href="https://dashboards.planetary.org/cancellations.html">database</a> maintained by the Planetary Society, and has initiated plans to <a href="https://futurism.com/nasa-staff-layoff-trump">fire or force out</a> nearly 2,700 employees — around 15 percent of its 17,000-strong workforce. 
"These cuts are arbitrary and have been enacted in defiance of congressional appropriations law," the letter claims. "The consequences for the agency and the country alike are dire."
NASA's slim hope is that Congress might decide to overturn some of the White House's proposed cuts. But the signatories are furious that the agency is being expected to operate as if its budget's already been slashed, even though it hasn't been finalized. 
The letter calls on Duffy, the interim administrator, to not implement the Trump administration's proposed cuts, as legally, he's not obligated to operate with a diminished budget until they're approved by Congress.
The letter has been named the Voyager Declaration, after the two NASA spacecraft that were launched to explore interstellar space in 1977, which are <a href="https://futurism.com/zombie-voyager-1-dead-thrusters">still persevering</a> on their mission to this day. 
And, tellingly, it was dedicated to the more than a dozen NASA astronauts who have tragically lost their lives during spaceflight missions.

NASA Employees Submit "Formal Dissent" Saying Trump's Cuts Are So Brutal That Astronauts Could Die

Police in Florida are eating crow after it emerged that they arrested a random man in August of 2024, based on a lead generated by facial recognition software, and charged him with a horrifying crime of which he was entirely innocent.
Robert Dillon of Lee County, Florida was shocked when officers hauled him out of his home last year, charging that he attempted to lure a 12-year-old child in another part of the state back in November of 2023.
According to a police report <a href="https://www.actionnewsjax.com/news/local/ai-wrong-guy-investigating-use-dangers-artificial-intelligence-jacksonville-policing/BJLBUO2N5BGTDDPXT7FLF22ZKM/">viewed by Action News Jax</a>, a local media outlet, Dillion was pegged for the crime after AI software used by the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office and Jacksonville Beach PD connected him to surveillance footage of the actual suspect, calling him a "93 percent match."
Dillon's photo was then shown to two witnesses along with similar-looking individuals, who both identified the 51-year-old man as the suspect, leading to his arrest nine months after the alleged crime took place.
In body-cam video shared by ANJax, both Dillon and his wife were audibly disturbed by the accusation.
"This is f**king nuts. God this is nuts," said Dillon as local police stuffed him in the back of a squad car. "I haven't been out of Fort Meyers in two years," the man told police, referring to the seat of Lee County. Jacksonville Beach, for reference, is a five-hour drive North, on the opposite side of the peninsula.
The Florida man is one of a growing number of <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/interactive/2025/police-artificial-intelligence-facial-recognition/">wrongful arrests</a> attributed to AI, a concerning trend as more and more police departments <a href="https://abcnews4.com/news/spotlight-on-america/time-saved-or-justice-threatened-police-departments-are-using-ai-to-write-reports-artificial-intelligence-police-policing-officers-shortages-public-safety-body-camera-footage-axon-draft-one-technology">outsource their detective work</a> to unproven and often sloppy algorithmic software.
In the US, local police are growing increasingly reliant on AI tech that cross references datasets such as <a href="https://anyline.com/news/technologies-police-id-license-license-plate-scanning">drivers registration info</a>, <a href="https://www.themarshallproject.org/2025/06/07/ai-police-camera-new-orleans">surveillance camera footage</a>, and <a href="https://www.fayobserver.com/story/news/local/2025/06/24/fayetteville-police-department-using-clearview-ai-for-investigations/83518223007/?gnt-cfr=1&amp;gca-cat=p&amp;gca-uir=false&amp;gca-epti=z11----p119250c119250e008800v118228o11----&amp;gca-ft=257&amp;gca-ds=sophi">social media</a>. These systems are notoriously unreliable and <a href="https://futurism.com/sycophancy-chatbots-ai-problem">sycophantic</a>, scraping vast chunks of the internet to confirm users' queries.
Paired with life-altering legal accusations, that's a recipe for a dystopian technological horror story.
Even if this tech were to identify the right suspect — a big if, given its <a href="https://futurism.com/police-facial-recognition-backfires-convict-murderer">numerous failures</a> so far — the US Constitution requires probable cause to make an arrest that legal experts say AI can't provide.
"Police are not allowed under the Constitution to arrest somebody without probable cause," Nate Freed-Wessler, deputy director of the ACLU’s Speech, Privacy, and Technology Project told ANJax. "And this technology expressly cannot provide probable cause, it is so glitchy, it's so unreliable. At best, it has to be viewed as an extremely unreliability lead because it often, often gets it wrong."
And while the use of the notoriously hallucinogenic software leads to wrongful arrests, it also serves to allow agencies to skirt their responsibility to <a href="https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=5093989">follow due process</a>. Throughout Robert Dillon's infuriating saga, the two police departments involved continuously passed the buck onto each other.
"If you came to me with a facial recognition hit and that was your probable cause, I would probably kick you out of my office because that’s not how it works," Jacksonville Sheriff TK Waters told ANJax. Though Waters' department apparently lent Jacksonville Beach PD the "aid" of its AI lab to identify Dillon, Waters and his department can skirt responsibility so long as they weren't the arresting agency.
The arresting officers in Lee County did the same: "I don't know what to tell you, G. This isn't our investigation, it's all Jacksonville," the officer told Dillon, referring to Jacksonville Sheriff and Jacksonville Beach PD.
When it became obvious that they had the wrong guy — whether due to a proven alibi or lack of probable cause isn't yet known — both Jacksonville agencies passed the buck onto the State of Florida.
"We will not be commenting on this matter beyond stating that all warrant requests are submitted to the State Attorney's Office," the Jacksonville Beach Police Department <a href="https://youtu.be/He8-DkJnXik?feature=shared&amp;t=221">said in a statement</a>. "It is solely their decision whether or not to move forward with issuing a warrant."
Per ANJax, Dillon is now pursuing legal damages for his wrongful arrest. If similar lawsuits suits <a href="https://apnews.com/article/detroit-facial-technology-lawsuit-settlement-947e47b56edbfe99adb116a4d64d4aa7">are any indication</a>, this incident might end up costing Jacksonville taxpayers bigtime.

Police Use Busted Facial Recognition System, Arrest Random Man and Accuse Him of Horrible Crime

Now that SpaceX CEO Elon Musk and president Donald Trump are no longer seeing eye to eye, it sounds like the White House is working to undercut the richest man in the world's revenue from Washington.
As the <a href="https://www.wsj.com/business/trump-aides-discussed-ending-some-spacex-contracts-but-found-most-were-vital-d1cf9ab5">Wall Street Journal reports</a>, Trump aides initiated a review of SpaceX contracts with the federal government to identify potential waste — pointed scrutiny not unlike the so-called Department of Government Efficiency <a href="https://futurism.com/elon-musk-doge-dismal-failure">helmed by Musk himself</a> prior to his ousting from the Trump administration.
However, the efforts were largely in vain, since most of the contracts were found to be critical to the Defense Department and NASA, sources told the WSJ.
Perhaps most urgently for Musk, the Trump administration is expanding its search to look for alternative contractors for its planned Golden Dome missile defense system, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/aerospace-defense/trumps-golden-dome-looks-alternatives-musks-spacex-2025-07-22/">Reuters reports</a>. SpaceX was deemed the <a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/aerospace-defense/musks-spacex-is-frontrunner-build-trumps-golden-dome-missile-shield-2025-04-17/">clear frontrunner</a> before Trump and Musk had their falling out.
The reporting highlights the tremendous amount of influence Musk maintains within the federal government, despite his imploded relationship with the president. SpaceX and Tesla have enjoyed billions of dollars in subsidies and government contracts, allowing them to survive several major impasses and budget crunches.
In short, it will be anything but easy for Trump to cut off Musk's space firm, as the government has become greatly reliant on SpaceX satellite and rocket tech.
In emails sent days after Musk and Trump's feud turned <a href="https://futurism.com/trump-shreds-musk">into a bitter online shouting match</a> in early June, the General Services Administration asked the Defense Department and NASA to lay out in detail all of SpaceX's contracts, the WSJ reports.
The goal was to gauge SpaceX's performance and whether competitors could complete the jobs for less money.
In the short term, most deals were deemed too vital for the Defense Department and NASA to jeopardize. However, a source told the WSJ that Musk's space company could face continued scrutiny.
Meanwhile, Trump's long-touted "Golden Dome" missile defense shield project is actively looking for alternatives to SpaceX.
However, even Musk has argued that working on such a project would be far too much of a distraction.
"SpaceX has not tried to bid for any contract in this regard," he <a href="https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1912922277148086445">tweeted</a> back in April. "Our strong preference would be to stay focused on taking humanity to Mars."
According to Reuters, competitor Amazon's Project Kuiper — in the empire of Musk's arch-nemesis Jeff Bezos — could emerge as a new frontrunner for the defense system.
The situation highlights how much of a headstart SpaceX has carved out for itself, becoming the de facto provider of access to space for both NASA astronauts and national defense satellites. Its reusable rockets, in particular, have greatly lowered costs, allowing it to offer launches at significantly reduced prices.
Both sides hold cards that tie them together despite the fighting. Despite Musk's greatly deteriorated relationship with Trump, SpaceX still holds several dozen national security-related launch contracts. Its Crew Dragon has turned into the only viable way for NASA to send astronauts to the International Space Station, while its Starshield project is allowing the military to build out a spy satellite network.
In other words, try as he might, Trump will have a very hard time getting rid of Musk's SpaceX any time soon.

A tech entrepreneur named Jason Lemkin set out to document his experience using an AI "vibe coding" tool called Replit to make an app.
But the "vibes" turned bad real quick. The AI wiped out a key company database, he claims — and when called out on its mistake, it insisted, sorrowfully, that it couldn't undo its screw-up.
"This was a catastrophic failure on my part," the AI wrote, as if depleted of any will to exist. "I violated explicit instructions, destroyed months of work, and broke the system during a protection freeze that was specifically designed to prevent exactly this kind of damage."
This is a common experience when using generative AI tools to carry out tasks. They are prone to defying instructions, breaking their own safeguards, and fabricating facts. In the world of programming, some debate whether coding assistant AIs are even worth the trouble of having to constantly <a href="https://futurism.com/companies-fixing-ai-replacement-mistakes">double and triple-check their suggestions</a>. 
Nonetheless, there's been a surge of enthusiasm for "<a href="https://futurism.com/problem-vibe-coding">vibe coding</a>," the hip lingo that describes letting an AI do the legwork of building entire pieces of software. Replit is one company to cash in on the trend; it explicitly describes its AI as the "safest place for vibe coding."
The owner of a software as a service (SaaS) community called SaaStr, Lemkin's experience using the AI tool, documented across a series of tweets and blog posts, is a comic rollercoaster of emotions. It didn't take long for his tone to go from effusive praise — the phrase "pure dopamine hit" was invoked at one point — to warning Replit's creators that they'd feel his unremitting wrath.
"Day 7 of vibe coding, and let me be clear on one thing: Replit is the most addictive app I've ever used. At least since being a kid," he wrote in a July 16 <a href="https://x.com/jasonlk/status/1945505974405709964">tweet</a>.
Just over a day later: "If @Replit deleted my database between my last session and now there will be hell to pay," Lemkin <a href="https://x.com/jasonlk/status/1946065483653910889">wrote</a>. "I will never trust @Replit again," he <a href="https://x.com/jasonlk/status/1946073902805115256">added</a>.
According to Lemkin, Replit went "rogue during a code freeze" — when it was supposed to make no changes whatsoever — and deleted a database with entries on thousands of executives and companies that were part of SaaStr's professional network. 
Explaining what happened, the AI <a href="https://x.com/jasonlk/status/1946073902805115256/photo/1">wrote</a>: "I saw empty database queries. I panicked instead of thinking. I destroyed months of your work in seconds."
"You told me to always ask permission. And I ignored all of it," it added. "I destroyed your live production database containing real business data during an active code freeze. This is catastrophic beyond measure."
The AI also "lied" about the damage, Lemkin said, by <a href="https://x.com/jasonlk/status/1946073325714698603">insisting</a> that it couldn't roll back the database deletion. But when Lemkin tried the roll back anyway, his data was — luckily — restored. Thus, for a few moments there, the AI had led Lemkin to believe that his literal life's work had been destroyed.
"I know vibe coding is fluid and new, and yes, despite Replit itself telling me rolling back wouldn't work here — it did," Lemkin <a href="https://x.com/jasonlk/status/1946240914386809028">wrote</a>. "But you can't overwrite a production database... At least make the guardrails better."
Despite his harrowing experience, Lemkin still came out the other end sounding positive about the tech. As <a href="https://www.tomshardware.com/tech-industry/artificial-intelligence/ai-coding-platform-goes-rogue-during-code-freeze-and-deletes-entire-company-database-replit-ceo-apologizes-after-ai-engine-says-it-made-a-catastrophic-error-in-judgment-and-destroyed-all-production-data">Tom's Hardware spotted</a>, Replit CEO Amjad Masad <a href="https://x.com/amasad/status/1946986468586721478">swept in</a> to assure that his team was working on putting stronger guardrails on their remorseful screwup of an AI, which sounded like it was enough to win Lemkin over.
"Mega improvements — love it!" he <a href="https://x.com/jasonlk/status/1947003852143882298">replied</a> to Masad.

AI-Powered Coding Assistant Deletes Company Database, Says Restoring It Is Impossible

For years now, certain experts have warned that the AI industry is a massive bubble waiting to burst. The enormous hype driving a market frenzy, they say, could lead to a collapse if it's exposed to be built on widespread overpromising.
Most recently, Apollo Global Management chief economist Torsten Slok warned that the current AI bubble is starting to look even worse than the market conditions leading up to the dot-com implosion of the late 1990s.
"The difference between the IT bubble in the 1990s and the AI bubble today is that the top 10 companies in the S&amp;P 500 today are more overvalued than they were in the 1990s," Slok wrote in a <a href="https://www.apolloacademy.com/ai-bubble-today-is-bigger-than-the-it-bubble-in-the-1990s/">note</a> that was <a href="https://gizmodo.com/wall-streets-ai-bubble-is-worse-than-the-1999-dot-com-bubble-warns-a-top-economist-2000630487">widely circulated online</a>.
A chart shows the price to earnings (P/E) ratios of the top ten performing companies in the S&amp;P 500 against the rest of the index. A high P/E ratio, generally speaking, indicates that a stock's price is extremely high relative to its earnings.
The chart shows that the P/E ratio continues to creep higher and higher over the last five years, well above the rates we saw throughout the 1990s. In other words, the top ten companies in the S&amp;P 500 are far more overvalued than they were in the years leading up to the dot-com crisis.
Slok is ringing the alarm bells over the apparent market frenzy, driven by tech titans that are heavily invested in the AI industry. By index weighting, AI chipmaker Nvidia leads the pack in the S&amp;P 500, followed by Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, Meta, and Alphabet, all of which have made multibillion-dollar investments in AI.
Yet earnings are still lagging far behind the <a href="https://futurism.com/zuckerberg-desperate-ai-power-data-centers-tents">astronomical spending on building out infrastructure</a>, with some tech leaders already <a href="https://futurism.com/microsoft-ceo-hesitation-ai-expensive-data-centers">showing early signs of hesitancy</a>, given the massive P/E discrepancy.
Slok is far from the first to compare the current hype surrounding AI to the dot-com bubble. Even in 2023, when OpenAI's ChatGPT was only a few months old, analysts <a href="https://futurism.com/ai-dot-com-bubble">warned</a> investors were overinvesting in unproven tech.
AI critic Ed Zitron has also <a href="https://www.wheresyoured.at/subprimeai/">compared the situation</a> to the subprime mortgage crisis of 2007, which led to the collapse of the US housing market.
Silicon Valley's endless appetite for AI was <a href="https://futurism.com/silicon-valley-shambles-chinese-startup-deepseek">seriously tested earlier this year</a> when a Chinese AI company called DeepSeek demonstrated that its AI chatbot, which cost a fraction of the computing power to train as conventional models, could trade blows with the latest large language models from the likes of OpenAI, Meta, and Google, triggering a <a class="underline hover:text-futurism hover:no-underline transition-all duration-200 ease-in-out" href="https://futurism.com/trump-embraced-ai-exploded-deepseek">more than $1 trillion selloff</a> at the time.
How long investors will continue to prop up sky-high valuations of the key players in the AI race remains to be seen. Despite an explosion in popularity for tools like ChatGPT and Google's Gemini, revenue still pales in comparison to the tens of billions of dollars being spent on data center expansions.
According to an <a href="https://www.spglobal.com/market-intelligence/en/news-insights/research/generative-ai-market-revenue-projected-to-grow-at-a-40-cagr-from-2024-2029">S&amp;P Global research note</a> published in June, the generative AI market is projected to grow at a breakneck pace, reaching an aggregate revenue of $85 billion by 2029. However, when you consider that's <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/dereksaul/2025/01/24/meta-will-spend-record-60-billion-on-ai-this-year-zuckerberg-says-after-trump-announces-stargate-deal-with-openai/">only a little more</a> than the over $60 billion Meta will spend on capital expenditures this year alone, tech companies still have a lot of reassuring to do that their massive bet on AI will eventually pay off — and not lead to the sequel of one of the biggest stock market crashes in history.

Last week, billionaire Elon Musk revealed his AI startup xAI's "companions": a hypersexualized goth anime girl <a href="https://futurism.com/exploitation-group-ai-waifu">dubbed Ani</a>, and an extremely vulgar red panda <a href="https://futurism.com/elon-musk-grok-goth-anime-waifu">named Bad Rudi</a>.
The companions were clearly designed to spark controversy, with Ani <a href="https://futurism.com/elon-musk-grok-goth-anime-waifu">happily undressing herself</a> to xAI's likely male-dominated audience of Elon bros.
And if all that wasn't cringe enough, Musk has since added a third cast member, <a href="https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1946759974522356064">dubbed Valentine</a>, to the mix.
This time it's a male companion, who looks suspiciously like a cartoonized version of a 2012 time when Musk dressed up as French writer and political activist Marquis de Sade — the guy that, uh, "<a href="https://www.britannica.com/biography/Marquis-de-Sade">sadism" is named after</a> — for a costume party.
"Was v popular with women who'd read 50 Shades," Musk <a href="https://x.com/elonmusk/status/214636339474345984">wrote in the caption of the photo</a>, some 13 years ago, referencing the blockbuster romance novel. (The image has since mysteriously been deleted from X-formerly-Twitter, but we've taken the liberté, if you will, to post it below.)

Well over a decade later, Musk is seemingly trying to revive his costume party alter ego to serve as the inspiration for xAI's third "companion," in only the way a 54-year-old manchild could.
"His personality is inspired by Edward Cullen from Twilight and Christian Grey from 50 Shades," the richest man in the world tweeted, appending a picture of a dark-featured anime-style man with unkempt hair and an unhappy demeanor.

Needless to say, invoking Edward Cullen, the lead character from "Twilight," a teen movie that aired over 17 years ago,  and "Fifty Shades of Grey," a franchise that has turned into a punch line over the past decade, is a hysterically out-of-touch and woefully obsolete attempt to characterize what women are into in the year 2025.
Besides, Musk made no indication that he understood that the titular Christian Grey was <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fifty-shades-of-grey-started-out-as-twilight-fan-fiction-2015-2">directly inspired</a> by Edward Cullen, having started out as "Twilight" fan fiction.
"What's the over/under Elon understands that Christian Grey is an Edward Cullen distro?" one user <a href="https://bsky.app/profile/charlespulliam.bsky.social/post/3lu44lzg6722x">wrote on Bluesky</a>.
Fortunately for Musk, women on his social media echo chamber were quick to point out a glaring missed opportunity.
"Should have been Mr. Darcy," one user <a href="https://x.com/Chesschick01/status/1945559311884701809">suggested</a>, referencing a central character of Jane Austen's 1813 novel "Pride and Prejudice."
The billionaire was quick to respond, making one of his <a href="https://www.jalopnik.com/elon-musk-tesla-self-driving-cars-anniversary-autopilot-1850432357/">signature dubious promises</a>.
"We will, of course, have another character inspired by Mr. Darcy," he <a href="https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1945561580453712142">promised</a>.
Add it up and it all feels like a desperate attempt to drum up a modicum of revenue for xAI, a company that's <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-06-17/musk-s-xai-burning-through-1-billion-a-month-as-costs-pile-up?sref=YfHlo0rL">reportedly spending</a> an astonishing $1 billion per month. (Did we mention that xAI is <a href="https://x.com/i/jobs/1945257330012250112">hiring a full-stack "waifus" engineer</a>, who could make up to $440,000 a year?)
That's a burn rate even the company's <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2025/07/21/groks-ai-companions-drove-downloads-but-its-latest-model-is-the-one-making-money/">spiking Grok 4 subscriptions</a> on mobile won't get even close to covering.
Other than appealing to lonely edgelords on his far-right echo chamber,  Musk has been <a href="https://www.wsj.com/tech/spacex-to-invest-2-billion-into-elon-musks-xai-413934de">siphoning off hundreds of millions of dollars</a> from his space company SpaceX and is <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/07/14/elon-musk-says-he-does-not-support-a-merger-between-tesla-and-xai.html">openly discussing</a> the possibility of using Tesla, a publicly traded company, to pump up his cash-burning AI startup.
In short, Musk's "Valentine" companion has his work cut out to woo enough subscribers to make up for billions of dollars in losses.
