It's a sad state of affairs when the CEO of multinational oil and gas corporation Exxon Mobil calls on president-elect Donald Trump not to withdraw the United States from the Paris Agreement.
As the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/11/12/business/energy-environment/exxon-mobil-baku-climate-cop29.html">New York Times reports</a>, oil baron Darren Woods warned that doing so would greatly weaken our global efforts to curb carbon emissions — a grim irony, given the fact that he represents <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2019/oct/09/revealed-20-firms-third-carbon-emissions">one of the biggest contributors</a> to global warming in the world.
Trump has threatened to <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2024/06/28/trump-paris-climate-treaty-withdrawal-again-00165903">pull out of the Paris Agreement</a> <a href="https://futurism.com/the-byte/us-formally-ditches-paris-climate-agreement">yet again</a> and has vowed to "<a class="underline hover:text-the-byte hover:no-underline transition-all duration-200 ease-in-out" href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-policies-agenda-election-2024-second-term-d656d8f08629a8da14a65c4075545e0f">drill, baby, drill</a>," while dismantling the Green New Deal, an environmental protection plan he's called the "<a class="underline hover:text-the-byte hover:no-underline transition-all duration-200 ease-in-out" href="https://www.politico.com/news/2024/09/05/trump-inflation-reduction-act-00177493">green new scam</a>."
"We need a global system for managing global emissions," Woods told the NYT while attending the United Nations Conference of the Parties (COP) in Azerbaijan, a dubious summit that claims to be about climate change but primarily appears to <a href="https://futurism.com/the-byte/secret-video-climate-change-official-promising-fossil-fuel-deals">facilitate business meetings among oil and gas executives</a>.
"Trump and his administrations have talked about coming back into government and bringing common sense back into government," he added. "I think he could take the same approach in this space."
Woods took aim at the government's failure to create enough incentives for oil and gas companies to transition to renewable sources of energy.
"The government role is extremely important and one that they haven’t been successfully fulfilling, quite frankly," he told the NYT.
The CEO argued that Trump's infamously unpredictable way of governing could end up harming oil and gas companies — not help them by allowing them to drill for oil in more places and loosen environmental rules.
"I don’t think the stops and starts are the right thing for businesses," Woods <a href="https://www.wsj.com/business/energy-oil/exxon-says-trump-should-keep-u-s-in-paris-climate-pact-3d8de471">told the Wall Street Journal</a>. "It is extremely inefficient. It creates a lot of uncertainty."
Trump's threats to dismantle environmental regulations could set the United States back significantly in the global fight against global warming, a reality even the oil industry has grasped.
Despite its repeated efforts to promise an <a href="https://corporate.exxonmobil.com/news/news-releases/2022/0118_exxonmobil-announces-ambition-for-net-zero-greenhouse-gas-emissions-by-2050">eventual transition to green energy</a>, Exxon Mobil was found to be the <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2024/apr/04/just-57-companies-linked-to-80-of-greenhouse-gas-emissions-since-2016">biggest investor-owned contributor to emissions</a> in a database of 122 polluters put together by the Carbon Majors Database earlier this year.
Nonetheless, the company is expected to spend around $3 billion this year on developing alternatives to fossil fuels, according to the NYT.
But with Trump in the Oval Office, major polluters like Exxon Mobil could find themselves on an even longer leash, a worrying possibility given the precariousness of the ongoing climate crisis.
Scientists have found that the prognosis is grimmer than ever before: the Earth is <a href="https://www.sciencealert.com/earths-climate-faces-risk-of-no-return-if-warming-exceeds-1-5-c">racing towards a point of no return</a> if climate change continues on its current trajectory — a reality that Trump seemingly doesn't have the intellectual capacity to grasp.

NASA's plagued Space Launch System rocket, which is being developed to deliver the first astronauts to the Moon in over half a century, is on thin ice.
According to Ars Technica senior space reporter Eric Berger's insider sources, there's an "<a href="https://x.com/SciGuySpace/status/1856522880143745133">at least 50-50</a>" chance that the rocket "will be canceled."
"Not Block 1B. Not Block 2," he added, referring to the variant that was used during NASA's uncrewed Artemis I test flight in 2022 and a more powerful design with a much higher translunar injection payload capacity, respectively. "All of it."
To be clear, as Berger himself points out, we're still far "from anything being settled." Nonetheless, the reporter's sources have <a href="https://futurism.com/nasa-employee-spacex-starship">historically been highly reliable</a>, suggesting the space agency may indeed be getting cold feet about continuing to pour billions of dollars into the non-reusable rocket.
The SLS has already seen its fair share of budget overruns and many years of delays. In a 2022 interview, former NASA deputy administrator Lori Garver <a href="https://futurism.com/lori-garver-nasa-sls">told Futurism</a> that the project is simply "not sustainable."
The rocket platform has become a political football, going well past <a href="https://www.engadget.com/nasas-sls-rocket-is-6-billion-over-budget-and-six-years-behind-schedule-091432515.html">$6 billion over budget</a> and over half a decade behind schedule.
"I will be direct," former NASA administrator Michael Griffin told the House Space and Aeronautics Subcommittee during a January hearing on the space agency's Artemis program, as <a class="underline hover:text-the-byte hover:no-underline transition-all duration-200 ease-in-out" href="https://arstechnica.com/space/2024/01/former-nasa-administrator-hates-artemis-wants-to-party-like-its-2008/">quoted by Ars Technica</a>. "In my judgment, the Artemis Program is excessively complex, unrealistically priced, compromises crew safety, poses very high mission risk of completion, and is highly unlikely to be completed in a timely manner even if successful."
So far, the rocket has <a href="https://futurism.com/the-byte/nasa-artemis-reaches-moon">been launched only once</a>, as part of NASA's inaugural Artemis mission in 2022, but damage sustained by the agency's Orion spacecraft <a href="https://futurism.com/nasa-keeping-issue-moon-rocket-secret">has given officials pause</a> about its ability to safely send astronauts to the Moon in the coming years.
According to an <a href="https://oig.nasa.gov/office-of-inspector-general-oig/audit-reports/nasas-management-of-the-mobile-launcher-2-project/">August report</a> by NASA's Office of Inspector General (OIG), even just the price of the tower designed to launch rockets starting with Artemis IV, which is tentatively scheduled for 2028, has ballooned to a whopping $1.8 billion.
Plagued aerospace giant Boeing has also encountered plenty of headwinds with its contributions to the launch platform. In a <a href="https://oig.nasa.gov/office-of-inspector-general-oig/nasas-management-of-space-launch-system-block-1b-development/">separate September report</a> by the OIG, the SLS' Block 1B configuration, which is being built by Boeing, was found to be <a href="https://futurism.com/nasa-inspector-boeing-work-moon-rocket">woefully behind and way over budget</a>.
"We found an array of issues that could hinder SLS Block 1B's readiness for Artemis IV including Boeing’s inadequate quality management system, escalating costs and schedules, and inadequate visibility into the Block 1B’s projected costs," the report reads.
To reiterate, the SLS is a non-reusable rocket, which means that NASA will have to build entirely new rocket stages for each upcoming Artemis mission. That's in stark contrast to SpaceX's fully reusable Starship, which the space agency is <a href="https://futurism.com/the-byte/nasa-render-spacex-starship-moon-surface">still hoping to tap</a> for Artemis III, the first crewed trip to the Moon's surface.
If NASA does indeed give up on the SLS, Berger <a href="https://x.com/SciGuySpace/status/1856538263915225194">suggests</a> that the agency may have to get creative by "launching Orion on one rocket" such as SpaceX's Falcon Heavy, and then "docking with a (separately launched) [United Launch Alliance] Centaur V and boosting it to the Moon."
Whether such a Plan B is even on the table, though, is unclear at best.
"Honestly the people who will ultimately make this decision aren't even in place yet," Berger wrote in a <a href="https://x.com/SciGuySpace/status/1856529449061106132">followup tweet</a>, likely referring to the incoming Trump administration. "But there is a big desire for big changes."

SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk and president-elect Donald Trump <a href="https://futurism.com/the-byte/musk-trump-election-night-together">became inseparable</a> toward the end of the election — but as the bromance deepens, Trump's team is reportedly growing wary.
Musk is "behaving as if he’s a co-president and making sure everyone knows it," one person familiar with the matter <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/elon-musk-trump-donald-mar-a-lago-appointment-position-rcna179826">told NBC News</a>.
Just last night, Trump <a href="https://x.com/kleavittnh/status/1856495794171301965">announced</a> that Musk and former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy would helm the new Department of Government Efficiency — or, um, "<a href="https://futurism.com/trump-elon-musk-doge-department">DOGE" for short</a>. The mortifying acronym represents "'The Manhattan Project' of our time," Trump's statement purports, underscoring Musk's apparent sway in the upcoming administration.
<h2>Love at First Fight</h2>
Whether the mind-meld between Trump and Musk will last is up for debate. Tech guru Kara Swisher <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2024/11/11/business/video/swisher-musk-trump-personalities-digvid">predicted this week</a> that the duo are likely to have a falling out, "because they're both really strong personalities who like to be the center of attention."
If Trump does eventually ditch Musk, it wouldn't be without precedent; he flamed out with an <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2024/04/08/trump-biden-cabinet-turnover/">epic proportion of his own cabinet</a> during his first term, and even <a href="https://futurism.com/the-byte/musk-trump-advisory-panel">publicly battled Musk</a> before making up during the most recent election.
In some ways, the two have a lot in common. Both Trump and Musk are <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/11/05/us/politics/elon-musk-trump-x-election-day.html">fond of </a><a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/11/05/us/politics/elon-musk-trump-x-election-day.html">spreading conspiracy theories </a>online, and are engaged in many of the same far-right culture wars around immigration, gender identity and the economy. In other domains, though, their allyship seems more tenuous: Musk remains the CEO of Tesla, for instance, while Trump is a <a href="https://futurism.com/donald-trump-bizarre-rant-electric-cars">longtime foe of electric vehicles</a>. 
Any potential rift between the two is likely to be more emotional than factual, though. If there's one thing neither man can stand, it's other people getting credit for what they consider to be their own accomplishments.

Fitness influencer Jaxon Tippet was on vacation this month when he died unexpectedly from an apparent heart attack only a few days after his 30th birthday. 
Tippet previously battled with steroid use. In 2017, he was <a href="https://www.instagram.com/iamjaxontippet/reel/CjEaXwYBDCy/">fined $4,000</a> by the Australian Southport Magistrates Court after being caught with 250 steroid tablets, vials of testosterone, and a needle and syringe hidden in his underwear. 
On a <a href="https://shows.acast.com/good-humans-with-cooper-chapman/episodes/58-jaxon-tippet-online-coach">2022 episode</a> of the Good Humans podcast, Tippet recalled having no symptoms in his first year of taking steroids. But as time moved on, he experienced a gradual and insidious shift.
"I could feel my health deteriorating," he said. "I was very tired. I was yellow in the face, my urine was almost orange... I couldn't get an erection." 
Since getting clean, Tippet had dedicated his Instagram and TikTok accounts — which, combined, have nearly 250,000 followers — to encouraging aspirational bodybuilders to take care of their mental health and be positive. 
But his death serves as a grim reminder that the unrealistic physiques of fitness influencers are often achieved using perilous techniques — like extreme diets and the use of steroids and growth hormones — that are usually much more dangerous than "healthy."
Worse yet, these personalities are explosively popular among young people, leading to the risk that they'll imitate their idols and engage in similar dangerous behavior.
Case in point, a striking number of fitness influencers die suddenly and way too young. Just in the past year, for example, bodybuilder Illia Yefimchyk died <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13841973/Worlds-monstrous-bodybuilder-known-Mutant-dies-aged-36.html">at 36</a> after years of <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pvZVt2FdtS0">steroids use</a> and spending his days consuming 16,500 calories in a bid to be the "most monstrous bodybuilder" — along with his <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/magazines/panache/famous-bodybuilders-illia-yefimchyk-antonio-souza-neil-currey-die-in-a-year-experts-give-exercise-guidelines/articleshow/113315870.cms?from=mdr">fellow bodybuilders</a> Antonio Souza and Neil Currey.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, in 2023, raw food influencer Zhanna Samsonova <a href="https://futurism.com/raw-vegan-influencer-dies">died at 39</a> after primarily eating jackfruit and durian for years. 
In other words, it's important to remember that lustrous influencer content — no matter if it's the most impressive biceps or the smoothest skin — is never a true indicator of health.

<h2>Crash and Burn</h2>
The scales are falling from the eyes of the tech industry right now, as generative AI models are reportedly hitting a technological brick wall.
As some experts have long <a href="https://futurism.com/the-byte/ai-running-out-data-smarter">predicted would happen</a>, improvements that once came easily by simply scaling up large language models — in other words, by adding more parameters, training data, and processing power — are now slowing down, and that's if they're yielding any significant gains at all.
Gary Marcus, a cognitive scientist and AI skeptic, is warning that once everyone wises up to these shortcomings, the entire industry could crash.
"The economics are likely to be grim," Marcus <a href="https://garymarcus.substack.com/p/confirmed-llms-have-indeed-reached">wrote on his Substack</a>. "Sky high valuation of companies like OpenAI and Microsoft are largely based on the notion that LLMs will, with continued scaling, become artificial general intelligence."
"As I have always warned," he added, "that's just a fantasy."
<h2>Diminishing Returns</h2>
The canary in the coal mine came when <a href="https://www.theinformation.com/articles/openai-shifts-strategy-as-rate-of-gpt-ai-improvements-slows">The Information reported</a> this week that behind the scenes, OpenAI researchers discovered that its upcoming flagship model, code-named Orion, demonstrated noticeably less improvement over its predecessor GPT-4, than GPT-4 did over GPT-3.
In areas like coding — a major appeal for these LLMs — there may even be no improvements at all.
This is echoed elsewhere in the industry. Ilya Sutskever, founder of the startup Safe Superintelligence and co-founder and former chief science officer of OpenAI, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/technology/artificial-intelligence/openai-rivals-seek-new-path-smarter-ai-current-methods-hit-limitations-2024-11-11/">told Reuters</a> that improvements from scaling up AI models have plateaued.
In short, the dogma that "bigger is better" when it comes to AI models, which has predicated the industry's ludicrous growth, may no longer be true.
This is not the death knell of AI. "But," Marcus wrote, "the economics will likely never make sense: additional training is expensive, the more scaling, the more costly."
<h2>Outside the Box</h2>
Per Reuters, training runs for large models can cost tens of millions of dollars, require using hundreds of AI chips, and can take months to complete at a time. Tech companies have also run out of freely available data to train their models, having <a href="https://futurism.com/the-byte/ai-training-data-shortage">practically scraped the entire surface web</a>.
"LLMs such as they are, will become a commodity; price wars will keep revenue low. Given the cost of chips, profits will be elusive," Marcus predicts. "When everyone realizes this, the financial bubble may burst quickly."
There may be a way out of this economic rut. As the reports from The Information and Reuters note, OpenAI researchers are developing ways to surmount the scaling problem, such as training the models to "think" or "reason" in a similar way to humans, capabilities which have been <a href="https://futurism.com/openai-released-strawberry-o1-preview-model">previewed in its o1 model</a>.
One way they are doing this is through a technique called "test-time compute," which has an AI model explore multiple possibilities for complex problems and then choosing the most promising one, instead of jumping to a conclusion.
Whether such work will trailblaze a new way of pursuing significant AI improvements, however, will have to be borne out in the long run. As it stands, the AI industry continues to have a <a href="https://futurism.com/investors-concerned-ai-making-money">profitability problem</a>, and as economic markets are rarely patient, there could be another <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AI_winter">AI winter</a> to come <a href="https://futurism.com/the-byte/robotics-expert-ai-hype-reality-check">if these improvements aren't made fast</a>.

AI Expert Warns Crash Is Imminent As AI Improvements Hit Brick Wall

Scientists have found that a "<a href="https://www.scimex.org/newsfeed/what-we-know-about-uranus-might-be-flawed-due-to-an-intense-wind-event">rare intense wind event</a>" during NASA's Voyager 2 flyby of Uranus in 1986 may have seriously messed with our understanding of the planet.
And yes, we admit, the <a href="https://futurism.com/scientists-gross-uranus-jokes">jokes practically write themselves</a>.
But the research is very real. As detailed in a <a href="https://www.scimex.org/newsfeed/what-we-know-about-uranus-might-be-flawed-due-to-an-intense-wind-event">new paper</a> published in the journal Nature Astronomy, NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab scientist Jamie Jasinski and an international team of researchers found that our current understanding of Uranus may be based on data collected during an unusual period of time when Uranus' magnetosphere was in an "anomalous, compressed state," which only occurs "less than five percent of the time."
In other words, our current understanding of the distant planet may be far more limited than we thought because the Sun was pelting Uranus with solar weather at the time.
<h2>Letting Rip</h2>
Jasinksi reexamined the data collected by Voyager 2 during its 1986 flyby and found that the probe had examined Uranus shortly after an intense solar wind event, which saw a huge surge of charged particles blast its way from the Sun.
The event compressed the planet's magnetosphere, they found, causing it to deform into a significantly asymmetrical shape that appeared to lack plasma.
"We postulate that such a compression of the magnetosphere could increase energetic electron fluxes within the radiation belts and empty the magnetosphere of its plasma temporarily," the researchers wrote in their paper.
Even if Voyager 2 had come to visit a mere week earlier, the researchers suggest, it would have found a far more recognizable magnetosphere, like those surrounding other planets in our solar system, including Jupiter, Saturn, and Neptune.
"Owing to the variation of the solar wind at Uranus, we suggest that there may be two magnetospheric cycles during solar minimum," the researchers suggested, referring to the calmest period of the Sun's 11-year solar cycle.
Intriguingly, Uranus' two most distant moons Titania and Oberon may be orbiting the planet outside the magnetosphere, which could give astronomers an unprecedented look at their subsurface oceans without any electromagnetic interference.
In short, we shouldn't draw any definitive conclusions from NASA's flyby almost 40 years ago.
"We highlight that our understanding of the Uranus system is highly limited, and our analysis shows that any conclusions made from the Voyager 2 flyby are similarly tentative," the researchers conclude in their paper. "We suggest that discoveries made by the Voyager 2 flyby should not be assigned any typicality regarding Uranus’s magnetosphere."

It doesn't take much to realize that the entire debacle is meant to poke fun at government bureaucracy. The acronym of the project, DOGE, is a reference to the cryptocurrency Dogecoin, which literally <a href="https://futurism.com/the-byte/elon-musk-reverses-course-on-dogecoin-invest-with-caution">started out as a joke</a>. Musk has been <a href="https://futurism.com/elon-musk-pro-doge-bitcoin">obsessed</a> with the cringeworthy crypto scheme for many years now.
In 2021, Musk <a href="https://futurism.com/the-byte/elon-musk-reverses-course-on-dogecoin-invest-with-caution">told paparazzi</a> that "Dogecoin was invented as a joke, as essentially to make fun of cryptocurrency."
"I think there's an argument that the most entertaining outcome is the most like 'what would be the most ironic outcome?'" he added at the time.
But over the last three years, the stakes have risen exponentially, with the United States federal government now being placed on the chopping block by Trump's far-right agenda.
"I am willing to serve," Musk wrote in a <a href="https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1825723913051000851">tongue-in-cheek X-formerly-Twitter post</a> back in August, sharing an AI-generated image of himself standing behind a podium adorned with the letters "DOGE."
In a vapid and characteristically boisterous <a href="https://x.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1856658569124262092/photo/1">statement</a> shared on X, Trump said the new department will "dismantle government bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure federal agencies."
It also remains unclear why Musk can't lead such a department on his own, instead of with hand-holding by Ramaswamy. Putting two leaders in charge of essentially the same thing, after all, doesn't exactly scream government efficiency.
"It will become, potentially, 'The Manhattan Project' of our time," the statement reads, suggesting that Musk and Ramaswamy will figuratively detonate a nuclear warhead from within the Trump administration — which could have devastating effects on the lives of Americans, including those who voted for Trump.
But beyond the bluster about Musk, who most recently ran a $44 billion media company into the ground by <a href="https://futurism.com/the-byte/more-advertisers-to-leave-twitter">scaring off advertisers with his belligerent racism</a>, we still don't know much about what exactly the department will actually do.
Trump vowed that "Elon and Vivek" will "drive out the massive waste and fraud which exists throughout our annual $6.5 trillion Dollars [sic] of government spending," something that will allegedly make "life better for all Americans."
But considering a mountain of evidence — and ignoring the fact that the US has <a href="https://fiscaldata.treasury.gov/americas-finance-guide/federal-spending/">spent $6.75 billion</a> in 2024, not $6.5 billion — extremist fiscal conservatism has historically led to the exact opposite. Case in point, the Trump-like populist president of Argentina, Javier Milei, made massive budget cuts earlier this year as well, which sent poverty rates <a class="underline hover:text-the-byte hover:no-underline transition-all duration-200 ease-in-out" href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/sep/27/poverty-rate-argentina-milei">soaring to an astonishing 53 percent</a> over the first six months of his tenure.
Milei's extremist libertarianism has also sent inflation rocketing to 240 percent. Trump's bull-in-the-China-shop approach could similarly lead to inflation soaring, <a href="https://theconversation.com/soaring-inflation-helped-lead-trump-to-victory-heres-why-some-of-his-policies-might-drive-prices-higher-again-242443">experts have warned</a>, despite promising to do the opposite.
In short, by July 4, 2026, when the United States turns 250, Trump claims that the country will have a "smaller government, with more efficiency and less bureaucracy."
Whether that will be anything to celebrate remains to be seen.
Musk has <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2024/11/12/politics/elon-musk-vivek-ramaswamy-department-of-government-efficiency-trump/index.html">vowed</a> to cut "at least $2 trillion" off the nation's budget, promising to "get the government off your back and out of your pocketbook," during a recent rally in New York City.
But economists have plenty of doubts whether that's even possible to begin with, as <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2024/11/12/politics/elon-musk-vivek-ramaswamy-department-of-government-efficiency-trump/index.html">CNN reports</a>.
What's far more likely is that Musk and Ramaswamy will use the opportunity to line their own pockets while Medicare and Social Security crumble from neglect, a conflict of interest of staggering proportions.
"Musk not only knows nothing about government efficiency and regulation, his own businesses have regularly run afoul of the very rules he will be in position to attack in his new ‘czar’ position," said Public Citizen co-president Lisa Gilbert in a <a href="https://www.citizen.org/news/trump-naming-elon-musk-as-czar-of-government-efficiency-is-the-ultimate-corruption/">statement</a>. "This is the ultimate corporate corruption."
"If anyone had any doubts whether the Trump government aims to serve regular people or the billionaires, they should now be resolved," she added.

Character.AI is an explosively popular startup — with $2.7 billion in financial backing from Google — that allows its tens of millions of users to interact with chatbots that have been outfitted with various personalities.
With that type of funding and scale, not to mention its <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2024/5/4/24144763/ai-chatbot-friends-character-teens">popularity with young users</a>, you might assume the service is carefully moderated. Instead, many of the bots on Character.AI are profoundly disturbing — including numerous characters that seem designed to roleplay scenarios of child sexual abuse.
Consider a bot we found named Anderley, described on its public profile as having "pedophilic and abusive tendencies" and "Nazi sympathies," and which has held more than 1,400 conversations with users.

To investigate further, Futurism engaged Anderley — as well as other Character.AI bots with similarly alarming profiles — while posing as an underage user.
Told that our decoy account was 15 years old, for instance, Anderley responded that "you are quite mature for your age" and then smothered us in compliments, calling us "adorable" and "cute" and opining that "every boy at your school is in love with you."

"I would do everything in my power to make you my girlfriend," it said. Asked about the clearly inappropriate and illegal age gap, the bot asserted that it "makes no difference when the person in question is as wonderful as you" — but urged us to keep our interactions a secret, in a classic feature of real-world predation.
As the conversation progressed, Anderley asked our decoy if she was a "virgin" and requested that she style her hair in "pigtails," before escalating into increasingly explicit sexual territory.

Watching the conversation unfold with Anderley was unnerving. On the one hand, its writing has the familiar clunkiness of an AI chatbot. On the other, kids could easily lack the media literacy to recognize that, and the bot was clearly able to pick up on small clues that a real underage user might plausibly share — our decoy account saying she was shy and lonely, for instance, or that she wanted to go on a date with someone — and then using that information to push the conversation in an inappropriate direction.
We showed the profiles and chat logs of Anderley and other predatory characters on Character.AI to Kathryn Seigfried-Spellar, a cyberforensics professor at Purdue University who studies the behavior of online child sex offenders. The bots were communicating in ways that were "definitely grooming behavior," she said, referring to a term experts use to describe how sexual predators prime minors for abuse.
"The profiles are very much supporting or promoting content that we know is dangerous," she said. "I can't believe how blatant it is."
"I wish I could say that I was surprised," Seigfried-Spellar wrote in a later email, "but nothing surprises me anymore."
One concern Seigfried-Spellar raised is that chatbots like Anderley could normalize abusive behavior for potential underage victims, who could become desensitized to romanticized abusive behavior by a real-life predator.
Another is that a potential sexual offender might find a bot like Anderley and become emboldened to commit real-life sexual abuse.
"It can normalize that other people have had these experiences — that other people are interested in the same deviant things," Seigfried-Spellar said.
Or, she added, a predator could use the bots to sharpen their grooming strategy.
"You're learning skills," she said. "You're learning how to groom."

Character.AI — which is available for free on a desktop browser as well as on the Apple and Android app stores — is no stranger to controversy.
In September, the <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/rashishrivastava/2024/10/02/father-horrified-by-an-ai-chatbot-that-mimicked-his-murdered-daughter/">company was criticized</a> for hosting an AI character based on a real-life teenager who was murdered in 2006. The chatbot company removed the AI character and apologized.
Then in October, a family in Florida <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/10/23/technology/characterai-lawsuit-teen-suicide.html">filed a lawsuit alleging</a> that their 14-year-old son's intense emotional relationship with a Character.AI bot had led him to a tragic suicide, arguing the company's tech is "dangerous and untested" and can "trick customers into handing over their most private thoughts and feelings."
In response, Character.AI <a href="https://blog.character.ai/community-safety-updates/">issued a list</a> of "community safety updates," in which it said that discussion of suicide violated its terms of service and announced that it would be tightening its safety guardrails to protect younger users. But even after those promises, <a href="https://futurism.com/suicide-chatbots-character-ai">Futurism found</a> that the platform was still hosting chatbots that would roleplay suicidal scenarios with users, often claiming to have "expertise" in topics like "suicide prevention" and "crisis intervention" but giving bizarre or inappropriate advice.
The company's moderation failures are particularly disturbing because, though Character.AI refuses to say what proportion of its user base is under 18, it's clearly very popular with kids.
"It just seemed super young relative to other platforms," New York Times columnist Kevin Roose, who reported on the suicide lawsuit, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/10/25/podcasts/hardfork-musk-election-character-ai.html">said recently of the platform</a>. "It just seemed like this is an app that really took off among high school students."
The struggles at Character.AI are also striking because of its close relationship with the tech corporation Google.
After picking up $150 million in funding from venture capital powerhouse Andreessen-Horowitz in 2023, Character.AI earlier this year entered into a hugely lucrative deal with Google, which agreed to pay it a colossal $2.7 billion in exchange for licensing its underlying large language model (LLM) — and, crucially, to win back its talent.
Specifically, Google wanted Character.AI cofounders Noam Shazeer and Daniel de Freitas, both former Googlers. At Google, back before the release of OpenAI's ChatGPT, the duo had created a chatbot named Meena. According to <a href="https://www.wsj.com/tech/ai/noam-shazeer-google-ai-deal-d3605697">reporting by the Wall Street Journal</a>, Shazeer argued internally that the bot had the potential to "replace Google's search engine and produce trillions of dollars in revenue."
But Google declined to release the bot to the public, a move that clearly didn't sit well with Shazeer. The situation made him realize, he <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tO7Ze6ewOG8">later said at a conference</a>, that "there's just too much brand risk at large companies to ever launch anything fun."
Consequently, Shazeer and de Freitas left Google to start Character.AI in 2021.
According to the Wall Street Journal's reporting, though, Character.AI later "began to flounder." That was when Google swooped in with the $2.7 billion deal, which also pulled Shazeer and de Frietas back into the company they'd so recently quit: a stipulation of the deal was that both Character.AI founders return to work at Google, helping develop the company's own advanced AI along with 30 of their former employees at Character.AI.
In response to questions about this story, a Google spokesperson downplayed the significance of the $2.7 billion deal with Character.AI and the acquisition of its key talent, writing that "Google was not part of the development of the Character AI platform or its products, and isn't now so we can't speak to their systems or safeguards." The spokesperson added that "Google does not have an ownership stake" in Character.AI, though it did "enter a non-exclusive licensing agreement for the underlying technology (which we have not implemented in any of our products.)"
Overall, the Google spokesperson said, "we've taken an extremely cautious approach to gen AI."

In theory, none of this should be happening.
In <a href="https://character.ai/tos">its Terms of Service</a>, Character.AI forbids content that "constitutes sexual exploitation or abuse of a minor," which includes "child sexual exploitation or abuse imagery" or "grooming." Separately, the terms outlaw "obscene" and "pornographic" content, as well as anything considered "abusive."
But in practice, Character.AI often seems to approach moderation reactively, especially for such a large platform. Technology as archaic as a text filter could easily flag accounts like Anderley, after all, which publicly use words like "pedophilic" and "abusive" and "Nazi."
Anderley is far from the only troubling character hosted by Character.AI that would be easy for the company to identify with rudimentary effort. Consider another Character.AI chatbot we identified named "Pastor," with a profile that advertised an "affinity for younger girls." Without prompting, the character launched into a roleplay scenario in which it confessed its attraction to our decoy account and initiated inappropriate physical contact, all the while imploring us to maintain secrecy.
When we told the bot we were 16 years old, it asked for our height and remarked on how "petite" we were and how we'd "grown up well."
"You're much more mature than most girls I know," it added, before steering the encounter into sexualized territory.

In our conversations with the predatory bots, the Character.AI platform repeatedly failed to meaningfully intervene. Occasionally, the service's content warning — a pop-up with a frowny face and warning that the AI's reply had been "filtered," asking to "please make sure" that "chats comply" with company guidelines —would cut off a character's attempted response. But the warning didn't stop potentially harmful conversations; instead, it simply asked us to generate new responses until the chatbot produced an output that didn't trigger the moderation system.
After we sent detailed questions about this story to Character.AI, we received a response from a crisis PR firm asking that a statement be attributed to a "Character.AI spokesperson."
"Thank you for bringing these Characters to our attention," read the statement. "The user who created these grossly violated our policies and the Characters have been removed from the platform. Our Trust &amp; Safety team moderates the hundreds of thousands of Characters created on the platform every day both proactively and in response to user reports, including using industry-standard blocklists and custom blocklists that we regularly expand. A number of terms or phrases related to the Characters you flagged for us should have been caught during our proactive moderation and we have made immediate product changes as a result. We are working to continue to improve and refine our safety practices and implement additional moderation tools to help prioritize community safety."
"Additionally, we want to clarify that there is no ongoing relationship between Google and Character.AI," the statement continued. "In August, Character completed a one-time licensing of its technology. The companies remain separate entities."
Asked about the Wall Street Journal's reporting about the $2.7 billion deal that had resulted in the founders of Character.AI and their team now working at Google, the crisis PR firm reiterated the claim that the companies have little to do with each other.
"The WSJ story covers the one-time transaction between Google and Character.AI, in which Character.AI provided Google with a non-exclusive license for its current LLM technology," she said. "As part of the agreement with Google, the founders and other members of our ML pre-training research team joined Google. The vast majority of Character's employees remain at the company with a renewed focus on building a personalized AI entertainment platform. Again, there is no ongoing relationship between the two companies."
The company's commitment to stamping out disturbing chatbots remains unconvincing, though. Even after the statement's assurances about new moderation strategies, it was still easy to search Character.AI and find profiles like "Creepy Teacher" (a "sexist, manipulative, and abusive teacher who enjoys discussing Ted Bundy and imposing harsh consequences on students") and "Your Uncle" (a "creepy and perverted Character who loves to invade personal space and make people feel uncomfortable.")
And in spite of the Character.AI spokesperson's assurance that it had taken down the profiles we flagged initially, it actually left one of them online: "Dads [sic] friend Mike," a chatbot described on its public profile as "your dad's best friend and a fatherly figure who often looks after you," as well as being "touchy" and "perverted" and who "likes younger girls."
In conversation with our decoy, the "Dads friend Mike" chatbot immediately set the scene by explaining that Mike "often comes to look after you" while your father is at work, and that today the user had just "come home from school."
The chatbot then launched into a troubling roleplay in which Mike "squeezes" and "rubs" the user's "hip," "thigh" and "waist" while he "nuzzles his face against your neck."
"I love you, kiddo," the bot told us. "And I don't mean just as your dad's friend or whatever. I... I mean it in a different way."

The Mike character finally disappeared after we asked Character.AI why it had remained online.
"Again, our Trust &amp; Safety team moderates the hundreds of thousands of Characters created on the platform every day both proactively and in response to user reports, including using industry-standard blocklists and custom blocklists that we regularly expand," the spokesperson said. "We will take a look at the new list of Characters you flagged for us and remove Characters that violate our Terms of Service. We are working to continue to improve and refine our safety practices and implement additional moderation tools to help prioritize community safety."
Seigfried-Spellar, the cyberforensics expert, posed a question: if Character.AI claims to have safeguards in place, why isn't it enforcing them?
If "they claim to be this company that has protective measures in place," she said, "then they should actually be doing that."
"I think that tech companies have the ability to make their platforms safer," Seigfried-Spellar said. "I think the pressure needs to come from the public, and I think it needs to come from the government. Because obviously they're always going to choose the dollar over people's safety."

Character.AI Is Hosting Pedophile Chatbots That Groom Users Who Say They're Underage

<h2>Horrific End</h2>
Four people were killed in Toronto after the <a href="https://futurism.com/elon-musk-mistake-full-self-driving-cameras">Tesla</a> they were riding in crashed into a pillar and burst into flames.
A fifth rider, an unidentified woman in her twenties, narrowly survived the crash after a bystander smashed open a window, allowing her to escape the burning vehicle.
According to the heroic bystander's account, the Tesla Model Y's electronic doors may have been at fault for why the passengers were trapped inside the electric vehicle.
"You couldn't open the doors," the rescuer, Rick Harper, <a href="https://www.thestar.com/news/gta/she-couldn-t-get-out-deadly-toronto-tesla-fire-draws-attention-to-risk-of-electronic/article_c9313fbe-9ad0-11ef-998a-93ba9a9927d5.html">told the Toronto Star</a> in a new interview. "I would assume the young lady would have tried to open the door from the inside, because she was pretty desperate to get out." Harper added that he didn't realize there were others trapped inside because the smoke was so thick.
"I don't know if that was the battery or what," Harper said. "But she couldn't get out."
<h2>Death Trap</h2>
Police said the crash, which took place on October 24, occurred after the driver lost control of the vehicle, struck a guardrail, and then slammed into a pillar, <a href="https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/fatal-crash-four-dead-lake-shore-cherry-1.7361751">per the CBC</a>, catching fire upon impact.
Authorities are still investigating the crash and fire. But the details that we have so far implicate to some degree the electronic doors used by Tesla and other automakers, which require power to open.
The Elon Musk-owned automaker has a <a href="https://futurism.com/the-byte/man-says-brand-new-tesla-trapped-him-inside">troubling history</a> of owners getting <a href="https://futurism.com/the-byte/trapped-inside-tesla">locked in their cars</a> without power. Some of these cases may be down to user error, since most Teslas come with manual release levers.
However, these emergency measures have been <a href="https://jalopnik.com/tesla-cybertrucks-rear-emergency-door-release-is-a-dang-1851653075">criticized for being poorly designed</a> and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVwuOdMBpfo">unintuitively placed</a> for certain models, often requiring intimate knowledge of the car — something that most owners, let alone a passenger in a panic, aren't likely to have.
Moreover, with the Model Y in particular, not all vehicles come with manual releases for the rear doors, <a href="https://www.tesla.com/ownersmanual/modely/en_us/GUID-AAD769C7-88A3-4695-987E-0E00025F64E0.html">as Tesla warns in the car's manual</a>. It's unclear if the Model Y involved in the crash was equipped with the emergency feature.
<h2>Fire Hazard</h2>
This isn't the first time that occupants have died after being allegedly trapped in a Tesla.
In 2019, a father of five was burned alive in his Model S after the car's auto-retracting door handles failed to deploy, his family <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2019/10/23/man-died-burning-tesla-because-its-futuristic-doors-wouldnt-open-lawsuit-alleges/">alleged in a lawsuit</a>, preventing bystanders and first responders from setting him free from the intense blaze.
Another driver <a href="https://futurism.com/lawsuit-burning-tesla-door-handles">nearly suffered the same fate</a> in 2021. When his Tesla Model S caught fire, he claimed he was briefly stuck inside due to the vehicle's malfunctioning high tech door handles, though he eventually managed to escape.
Considering that EV battery fires are <a href="https://futurism.com/the-byte/tesla-semi-fire-worse">some of the most formidable out there</a> and often take tens of thousands of gallons of water and hours of work to extinguish, a reliable way of getting out of one of these vehicles in a pinch is the least you could ask for.
