# Solid-State Construction Could Improve Battery Capacity by 20%

- New findings suggest that replacing one of the main components of the battery, the electrolyte, with a solid structure instead of the liquid one of today could increase power, safety, cost, and lifetime.
- There is much research is being done on improving the life of lithium-ion batteries, which are used in everything from cellphones to electric cars. The solid-state structure improves power density by 20-30%, with a corresponding increase in how long it can power a device.
- Lithium-ion batteries also cause occasional heating and combustion, which has been a setback for companies such as Boeing. The new solid-state electrolyte will preserve the lithium in a nonflammable state. The battery will also be free of most degradation reactions, meaning it can last through hundreds of thousands of cycles.
