Today marked the anniversary of the first manned spaceflight, which was accomplished by cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin on April 12, 1961.

He became the first human to ever leave the planet as a result of his 108-minute trip. It would be his only spaceflight. Yesterday, we celebrated this achievement–mankind’s great ‘exit from the cradle’– with a giant, worldwide party!

This party is called (appropriately enough) Yuri’s Night, and is held in numerous places with music, space nerdery, and lots of good cheer.

And this year, an important milestone has been reached: A Yuri’s Night on another planet!

Yes, it happens that Mars Curiosity celebrated Yuri’s Night on Mars, marking the official landing of Gagarin’s legacy onto another world.
