## Meatless Marinara

What do [Del Taco](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/taco-bell-competitor-embraces-plant-based-meat>), [Burger King](<https://futurism.com/burger-king-impossible-whopper-nationwide>), [Tim Horton's](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/just-eggs-tim-hortons-fast-food-deal>), and [Little Caesars](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/little-caesars-impossible-meatless-sausage>) have in common? They've all started selling plant-based meat alternatives.

And now, sandwich juggernaut Subway is joining the fray — the ultimate sign that fake meat is going mainstream.

## Italian Herbs and Protein

The international franchise [has announced](<https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/subway-restaurants-and-beyond-meat-unveil-its-strategic-culinary-partnership-and-the-beyond-meatball-marinara-300897696.html>) a partnership with [rising fake meat star](<https://www.cnbc.com/video/2019/07/25/beyond-meats-13point4-billion-market-cap-is-beyond-ridiculous.html>) Beyond Meat to test out a limited-time sandwich called the Beyond Meatball Marinara Sub in 685 restaurants across North America.

As you might have guessed, the sandwich — described as "with a plant-based twist" in a [press release](<https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/subway-restaurants-and-beyond-meat-unveil-its-strategic-culinary-partnership-and-the-beyond-meatball-marinara-300897696.html>) — will feature Beyond Meat's plant-based concoction that reportedly packs 24 grams of protein into each six-inch sub.

## Faux Meat is Here to Stay

The meatless food alternatives industry is booming right now. Burger King [announced last week](<https://futurism.com/burger-king-impossible-whopper-nationwide>) that its Impossible Whopper is going nationwide, and Beyond Meat's [stock is booming](<https://globalnews.ca/video/5678284/beyond-meat-stock-surges-734-per-cent-since-ipo>) after going public in May.

Even regulators are getting on board: last month, the Food and Drug Administration [announced](<https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-07-31/impossible-burger-s-color-gets-fda-nod-clearing-retail-hurdle>) that it marked Impossible Foods' key ingredient called soy leghemoglobin as "safe" — a move that could allow the imitation meat maker to sell raw product in grocery stores.
