# “Severe” Sriracha Shortage Threatens Spiceless Summer

## Sad Sriracha

If you're out of Sriracha, you might soon be out of luck — because the manufacturers of the classic rooster sauce say their already "severe" shortage might last through the summer, [*CBS* reports](<https://www.cbsnews.com/news/sriracha-shortage-could-last-through-the-summer-huy-fong-foods-drought-chile-hot-sauce/>).

While Huy Fong Foods, the makers of Sriracha, [warned](<https://www.callifd.com/uploads/1/3/0/7/130789654/chili_pepper_shortage_2022.pdf>) us back in April that issues with the supply of chili peppers may result in a summer-long Sriracha shortage, the internet collectively didn't find out about the arguably life-threatening problem until this week.

Unsurprisingly, netizens didn't take the news well.

"The apocalypse is nigh," [one Twitter user wrote](<https://twitter.com/o2bnobx/status/1534933522842107904>) in response to the seriously sucky Sriracha setback. "Getting on my bike and headed straight to H Mart!"

In one particularly-viral tweet, one user [shared a photo](<https://twitter.com/smallestpuppy/status/1534720110715457538>) of their Sriracha-laden shopping cart, while another posted a screenshot of them [begging their partner to pick up some bottles](<https://twitter.com/JoshLeeKwai/status/1534967941577383936>) for the house.

## Muh Supply Chain!

As [*CBS* notes](<https://www.cbsnews.com/news/sriracha-shortage-could-last-through-the-summer-huy-fong-foods-drought-chile-hot-sauce/>), Huy Fong has not publicly disclosed where it gets its chilis. But droughts in chili-growing regions of North America, like Mexico and hotter parts of the West Coast of the US could be the culprit.

Of course, pandemic-era supply chain disruptions have screwed with everything from [tech manufacturing](<https://www.thomsonreuters.com/en-us/posts/tax-and-accounting/pandemic-preparation-global-supply-chains/>) to [Christmas cheesecakes](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/hackers-are-the-reason-theres-not-enough-cream-cheese-right-now>), so it's not shocking that our beloved Sriracha might be next.

Nevertheless, it's truly horrific to imagine slogging through the dog days of summer without getting that additional burst of heat on our pizza, ramen, or pho.

At Futurism, I've often been drawn to unpacking the narratives that underlie technological, scientific and medical progress, with a special interest in areas of conflict and ambiguity that end up setting agendas and steering the fates of both elites and the hoi polloi. I'm a committed generalist, but I often find myself returning to work involving NASA and the private space sector, the effects of AI on media and society, and the mechanics of the pharmaceutical industry, with a specific focus on the spread of GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy. Prior to Futurism, I worked for publications ranging from Media Matters and Truthdig to Raw Story and Bustle. I'm also the author of "Myspace Scene Queens," a 2024 title in Instar Books' acclaimed "Remember the Internet" series. My work at Futurism has been cited by outlets including the New Yorker, Slate, Nieman Lab, the Verge, the MIT Technology Review, the Sunday Times, and the Daily Beast. I grew up in North Carolina, attended the University of North Carolina at Asheville, and now live in Brooklyn, New York. In my free time, I'm an avid reader and music fan; you can probably find me at a local poetry reading, concert, underground rave, or DJ set.
