## Starlinked

After making its beta available to roughly 10,000 customers, [*CNBC* reports](<https://www.cnbc.com/2021/02/09/spacexs-starlink-accepting-99-preorders-as-musk-considers-ipo.html>), SpaceX is now accepting preorders of its [Starlink](<https://futurism.com/tags/starlink>) broadband internet service.

Depending on the region, some customers are getting a message that reads "Starlink is targeting coverage in your area in mid to late 2021." Other areas will have to wait until next year, according to *CNBC*.

SpaceX began its public Starlink beta program in October. Customers have had to shell out $99 a month for the service, plus a $499 one-time fee to buy the Starlink kit. The kit includes a dish that connects to the satellites as well as a WiFi router.

## Growing Constellation

So far, SpaceX has launched [over 1,000 Starlink satellites](<https://spacenews.com/spacex-surpasses-1000-satellite-mark-in-latest-starlink-launch/#:~:text=WASHINGTON%20%E2%80%94%20SpaceX%20launched%20its%20latest,at%20the%20Kennedy%20Space%20Center.>) to build out its ambitious constellation in low-Earth orbit. The company has already asked the FCC for permission to [launch tens of thousands](<https://futurism.com/scientists-spacex-satellites-threaten-astronomy-itself>) more.

In a [FCC filing last week](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/spacex-has-plans-to-start-a-starlink-phone-service>), the company also noted that it now has "over 10,000 users in the United States and abroad."

## Spin Off

The news sets the stage for SpaceX's plans to spin off Starlink and take it public in an initial public offering (IPO).

"Once we can predict cash flow reasonably well, Starlink will IPO,” SpaceX CEO Elon Musk wrote in [a tweet](<https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1359027355851841536>).

"SpaceX needs to pass through a deep chasm of negative cash flow over the next year or so to make Starlink financially viable," the billionaire explained in a separate tweet.

"Every new satellite constellation in history has gone bankrupt," he added. "We hope to be the first that does not."

## Author
I've been at Futurism since 2017, where my role has evolved to encompass design, writing, and increasingly editing. I've always been fascinated by space exploration and advanced transportation, which I've leaned into by interviewing luminaries in those fields while closely following the dimensions of policy and regulation that allow next-generation projects to succeed -- or, sometimes, to fail. I'm also keenly interested in the effects of generative AI on society, policies, and democratic institutions, as well as clean energy, physics and biology, and the vagaries of tech leadership. My work for Futurism has been cited by publications including Ars Technica, Gizmodo, PC Magazine, Jalopnik, Fox News, and the New York Post. I spent my childhood living in locations including Manila, the Philippines, and Geneva, Switzerland, attended McGill University, and now live in Toronto, Canada. Before Futurism I worked at AskMen and a small photography studio. In my free time, I'm an avid gardener, foodie, and craft beer lover, as well as a maker of artisanal hot pepper sauces. I have a magnificent dog named Freida.
