## Thrusters Engaged

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, the richest man in the world, just got a lot richer.

The private space company's valuation has sky-rocketed to $350 billion following a secondary share sale, [*CNBC* reports](<https://www.cnbc.com/2024/12/11/spacex-valuation-surges-to-350-billion-as-company-buys-back-stock.html>), a stunning [67 percent rise](<https://www.cnbc.com/video/2024/06/27/spacexs-valuation-rockets-to-around-210-billion.html>) from its June 2024 valuation that further cements its dominance in the industry.

That means SpaceX is now worth more than [McDonald's, Coca-Cola](<https://x.com/MorningBrew/status/1866887552281743696>) — or even other top US defense contractors, per *CNBC*.

The news also highlights just how much Musk's influence over president-elect Donald Trump has instilled a sense of confidence among investors.

"What’s really crazy about this is that almost no investors wanted to sell shares even at a $350B valuation!" Musk [tweeted](<https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1866789126814699824>). "SpaceX reduced the amount of shares it bought back from employees in order to allow some new investors in."

## Space Domination

Now that Musk has established himself as the [right-hand man](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/elon-musk-controlling-trump>) of the soon-to-be most powerful person in the world, SpaceX could greatly expand its key businesses in a regulatory vacuum.

The news comes after Trump [promised Musk and other billionaires](<https://futurism.com/elon-musk-trump-billionaires-exempt-environmental-rules>) an easy way to bypass "approvals and permits, including, but in no way limited to, all Environmental \[sic\] approvals."

"This is awesome," [gloated](<https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1866571568266219998>) Musk in response.

SpaceX has plenty of irons in the fire. For one, it's currently developing its Starship, a heavy-lift launch platform that could [soon play an important role](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/nasa-render-spacex-starship-moon-surface>) in NASA's efforts to return humans to the surface of the Moon for the first time in over half a century.

The company has also deployed over 6,700 Starlink satellites, by far the largest constellation to provide consumer-focused internet services.

SpaceX has also established itself as a key launch partner for the Pentagon, allowing defense contractors to send [spy satellites](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/pentagon-elon-musk-spy-satellites>) and other top-secret assets into orbit.

Trump also [recently named](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/trump-names-jared-isaacman-space-tourist-head-nasa>) billionaire tech founder and SpaceX space tourist Jared Isaacman as the next head of NASA, which could give the space company [even more leverage](<https://futurism.com/jared-isaacman-head-nasa-history>) when it comes to federal funding and government contracts.

Meanwhile, Musk's personal net worth has [topped $400 billion](<https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-12-11/elon-musk-net-worth-tops-400-billion-a-historic-first?sref=YfHlo0rL>) — the first person to ever do so.

## Author
I've been at Futurism since 2017, where my role has evolved to encompass design, writing, and increasingly editing. I've always been fascinated by space exploration and advanced transportation, which I've leaned into by interviewing luminaries in those fields while closely following the dimensions of policy and regulation that allow next-generation projects to succeed -- or, sometimes, to fail. I'm also keenly interested in the effects of generative AI on society, policies, and democratic institutions, as well as clean energy, physics and biology, and the vagaries of tech leadership. My work for Futurism has been cited by publications including Ars Technica, Gizmodo, PC Magazine, Jalopnik, Fox News, and the New York Post. I spent my childhood living in locations including Manila, the Philippines, and Geneva, Switzerland, attended McGill University, and now live in Toronto, Canada. Before Futurism I worked at AskMen and a small photography studio. In my free time, I'm an avid gardener, foodie, and craft beer lover, as well as a maker of artisanal hot pepper sauces. I have a magnificent dog named Freida.
