## To the Moon

Dogecoin is officially going to the Moon — with the help of a SpaceX satellite called Doge-1, [*The New York Times* reports](<https://www.nytimes.com/2021/05/10/business/dogecoin-had-an-eventful-weekend-thanks-to-elon-musk.html>), in a mission paid for entirely with the digital meme currency.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk's pet cryptocurrency may have started as a joke many years ago, but the token has come a long way. And that's in large part due to Musk's enthusiasm for it.

Musk made the reveal the morning after his Dogecoin-laden appearance on "Saturday Night Live," [twee](<https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1391523807148527620>)[t](<https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1391523807148527620>)[ing](<https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1391523807148527620>) a teaser about the mission.

"SpaceX launching satellite Doge-1 to the moon next year," he said. "To the mooooonnn!!"

## Crypto in Space

It's a mission that's not only "paid for in Doge," according to the CEO, but also the "first" crypto and "meme" in space.

In other words, what started as a meme about a joke cryptocurrency is now becoming a reality — all thanks to an obsession of the richest man in the world.

## Elon Coin

Musk's appearance on the late night comedy show had such a big impact on crypto trading that it [appeared to have broken the Robinhood trading app](<https://www.foxbusiness.com/markets/dogecoin-volatility-elon-musk-snl-robinhood-crypto-trading-goes-down-again>).

The value of Dogecoin [dropped precipitously](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/dogecoin-price-elon-musk-snl>) from an all time high of $0.74 as Musk [hyped up his SNL appearance](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/elon-musk-tweets-doge-guest-snl>) to just $0.52 when Musk appeared onscreen.

Musk did, however, [make it clear last week](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/elon-musk-reverses-course-on-dogecoin-invest-with-caution>) in a tweet that Dogecoin is likely still a terrible investment.

"Cryptocurrency is promising, but please invest with caution," the CEO wrote [in a tweet](<https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1390522866979033092>) last week.

## Author
I've been at Futurism since 2017, where my role has evolved to encompass design, writing, and increasingly editing. I've always been fascinated by space exploration and advanced transportation, which I've leaned into by interviewing luminaries in those fields while closely following the dimensions of policy and regulation that allow next-generation projects to succeed -- or, sometimes, to fail. I'm also keenly interested in the effects of generative AI on society, policies, and democratic institutions, as well as clean energy, physics and biology, and the vagaries of tech leadership. My work for Futurism has been cited by publications including Ars Technica, Gizmodo, PC Magazine, Jalopnik, Fox News, and the New York Post. I spent my childhood living in locations including Manila, the Philippines, and Geneva, Switzerland, attended McGill University, and now live in Toronto, Canada. Before Futurism I worked at AskMen and a small photography studio. In my free time, I'm an avid gardener, foodie, and craft beer lover, as well as a maker of artisanal hot pepper sauces. I have a magnificent dog named Freida.
