## New Chapter

Vice President Joe Biden is now the new president-elect, and scientists are thrilled about the notion of having a president who actually takes the threats of climate change [and COVID-19](<https://futurism.com/neoscope/biden-rejoin-world-health-organization>) seriously.

"Our long national nightmare is over," University of Wisconsin Law School bioethicist Alta Charo [told *Nature* ](<https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-020-03158-8>), quoting former President Gerald Ford. "I couldn’t say it any better than that."

"It feels very much like the four-year war on science has come to an end," University of Maine ecologist Jacquelyn Gill [told *BuzzFeed News*](<https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/stephaniemlee/joe-biden-president-trump-scientists>).

It remains to be seen how effective Biden will be at tackling important scientific issues but, if nothing else, Biden's preparation for the presidency is a sign that [he's gearing up](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/biden-rejoin-paris-climate-accord-first-day-presidency>) for the difficult fights ahead.

## Science Matters

President Trump spent his entire term [deregulating industries](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/trump-epa-oil-industry-relax-methane-leaks>) that harm the planet and defunding agencies meant to preserve it — a move that *[CNET ](<https://www.cnet.com/news/donald-trump-ignored-the-science-joe-biden-must-rely-on-it/#ftag=CAD590a51e>)*[reports](<https://www.cnet.com/news/donald-trump-ignored-the-science-joe-biden-must-rely-on-it/#ftag=CAD590a51e>) widely damaged the public's trust in science and the institutions that perform it. It's also a pattern that stands in stark contrast to Biden's acceptance speech.

"I believe it’s this: America has called upon us to marshal the forces of decency, the forces of fairness," [Biden said](<https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2020/11/07/annotated-biden-victory-speech/>) Saturday. "To marshal the forces of science and the forces of hope in the great battles of our time."

## Pre-emptive Strike

So far, Biden has already announced his coronavirus task force — which unlike Trump's doesn't include [his own family](<https://www.nbcnews.com/think/opinion/trump-enables-jared-kushner-s-coronavirus-task-force-revealing-dangers-ncna1176511>) or [pillow salespeople](<https://futurism.com/neoscope/fake-covid19-cure-absolutely-destroyed>). He's also vowed to bring the U.S. back into [the World Health Organization](<https://futurism.com/neoscope/biden-rejoin-world-health-organization>) and [the 2015 Paris climate agreement](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/biden-rejoin-paris-climate-accord-first-day-presidency>).

"It is testament to the strengths and resilience of US science that it has weathered the past four years," James Wilsdon, a social scientist at the University of Sheffield, told *Nature. "*It can look forward now to a period of much-needed stability and support from \[Biden's\] administration."
