## Amazing View

Russian cosmonaut Oleg Novitskiy has shared an amazing video taken on board the International Space Station's latest addition, Russia's Multipurpose Laboratory Module known as "Nauka."

It's a rare glimpse of the module's interior following an [extremely fraught launch and docking](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/space-station-incident-worse-nasa-admitted>) with the orbital outpost.

## Space Shutters

The video shows off the incredible view from one of the module's Earth-facing windows — and the several layers of protection to ensure the station crew's safety.

Novitskiy can be seen removing a protective shield covering the glass. Later on in the video, a massive shutter slowly closes in on the window, likely to protect against damage from [micrometeoroids](<https://www.esa.int/Science_Exploration/Human_and_Robotic_Exploration/Node-3_Cupola/The_Cupola_opens_its_seven_eyelids>) and space debris, as well as to [keep the heat in](<https://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2001/ast21mar_1>).

The Nauka module's [launch](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/russias-space-station-module-launch-drama>) and [docking](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/iss-module-unexpectedly-fires-thrusters>) were troubled from the start. Even its early development, which began almost a decade and a half ago, [faced countless delays](<https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-58013283>).

Once the module docked with the ISS earlier this month, it unexpectedly fired its thrusters uncontrollably, causing the entire station to [spin one and a half revolutions](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/space-station-incident-worse-nasa-admitted>).

But now that it's arrived and is safely attached to the rest of the Russian segment, it's providing cosmonauts with an incredible view of the Earth below — perhaps some much deserved respite after a turbulent rendezvous.

## Author
I've been at Futurism since 2017, where my role has evolved to encompass design, writing, and increasingly editing. I've always been fascinated by space exploration and advanced transportation, which I've leaned into by interviewing luminaries in those fields while closely following the dimensions of policy and regulation that allow next-generation projects to succeed -- or, sometimes, to fail. I'm also keenly interested in the effects of generative AI on society, policies, and democratic institutions, as well as clean energy, physics and biology, and the vagaries of tech leadership. My work for Futurism has been cited by publications including Ars Technica, Gizmodo, PC Magazine, Jalopnik, Fox News, and the New York Post. I spent my childhood living in locations including Manila, the Philippines, and Geneva, Switzerland, attended McGill University, and now live in Toronto, Canada. Before Futurism I worked at AskMen and a small photography studio. In my free time, I'm an avid gardener, foodie, and craft beer lover, as well as a maker of artisanal hot pepper sauces. I have a magnificent dog named Freida.
