## Electric Badger

The war of the electric pickup trucks is upon us.

Tesla competitor Nikola Motors has started taking reservations for its upcoming Badger electric and hydrogen-powered pickup truck.

For $5,000 fee, customers can secure their own powerhouse truck that will eventually be competing against Tesla's much-hyped Cybertruck.

The news caused Nikola share values to climb seven percent, [*Business Insider* reports](<https://www.businessinsider.com/nikola-stock-price-after-opening-truck-reservations-pickup-electric-tesla-2020-6?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=referral>). The automaker, which has yet to make a single dollar in revenue, saw a [massive surge](<https://www.bloombergquint.com/business/meet-nikola-a-26-billion-electric-truck-maker-with-no-revenue>) in its valuation, climbing above $20 billion upon going public earlier this year — even surpassing the market values of established automakers Chrysler and Ford.

## High on Hydrogen

The Badger has some striking differences with Tesla's Cybertruck: it extends the battery capacity of a lithium battery with a hydrogen fuel cell generator, expanding its range to an advertised 600 miles — that is, if you live near one of the [few hydrogen refueling stations](<https://futurism.com/history-elon-musk-feud-rival-nikola>).

Tesla isn't quite there, but it claims the Cybertruck will be able to pass the [500-mile](<https://futurism.com/telsa-cybertruck-deal>) threshold with its batteries.

There will also be a battery-only version of the Badger truck that'll squeeze out a respectable 300 miles per charge.

Nikola is planning to sell the Badger for anywhere [between $60,000 and $90,000](<https://www.cnbc.com/2020/06/16/nikola-founder-our-60000-electric-badger-pickup-will-rival-ford-150.html>), depending on options.

The Cybertruck will undercut this entry-level price point by almost $20,000 when it starts rolling off the lot in late 2021, starting at just $39,900 for a less powerful single-motor variant.

According to crowdsourced estimations made in April, Tesla has received reservations for [almost half a million](<https://electrek.co/2020/04/14/tesla-cybertruck-orders-electric-pickup-unveiling/>) Cybertrucks. Tesla, however, stopped announcing its own numbers back in February.

## Author
I've been at Futurism since 2017, where my role has evolved to encompass design, writing, and increasingly editing. I've always been fascinated by space exploration and advanced transportation, which I've leaned into by interviewing luminaries in those fields while closely following the dimensions of policy and regulation that allow next-generation projects to succeed -- or, sometimes, to fail. I'm also keenly interested in the effects of generative AI on society, policies, and democratic institutions, as well as clean energy, physics and biology, and the vagaries of tech leadership. My work for Futurism has been cited by publications including Ars Technica, Gizmodo, PC Magazine, Jalopnik, Fox News, and the New York Post. I spent my childhood living in locations including Manila, the Philippines, and Geneva, Switzerland, attended McGill University, and now live in Toronto, Canada. Before Futurism I worked at AskMen and a small photography studio. In my free time, I'm an avid gardener, foodie, and craft beer lover, as well as a maker of artisanal hot pepper sauces. I have a magnificent dog named Freida.
