## Comms Restored

Finally some good news!

NASA has restored communications with CAPSTONE, a spacecraft that was headed to the Moon when it [plunged into radio silence](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/nasa-loses-contact-capstone>) on Tuesday, shortly after [escaped Earth's orbit](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/nasa-satellite-headed-toward-moon>).

"We have re-established communications with CAPSTONE," reads [a tweet](<https://twitter.com/AdvancedSpace/status/1544704660191465473>) by Advanced Space, a spaceflight company that collaborated on the development of the spacecraft with NASA. "The spacecraft is looking happy and healthy."

NASA later [confirmed the news](<https://blogs.nasa.gov/artemis/2022/07/06/capstone-update-communications-re-established/>) in a brief statement. It's an excellent update, with crews working around the clock to reestablish contact over the last 24 hours or so, and was met with much celebration online.

## Re-Establishing Contact

On Tuesday, [NASA announced](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/nasa-loses-contact-capstone>) it had encountered "communication issues while in contact with the Deep Space Network," referring to a global network of ground-based facilities allowing NASA and non-NASA spacecraft to keep in touch with each other.

The CAPSTONE mission is meant to lay the groundwork for [NASA's Gateway space station](<https://futurism.com/nasa-deep-space-gateway-2024>) by testing out a new elliptical, cislunar orbit.

While still don't know how exactly the team was able to re-establish communications, or why communications were lost in the first place. We're likely to hear more from Advanced Space and NASA soon, so stay tuned.

## Author
I've been at Futurism since 2017, where my role has evolved to encompass design, writing, and increasingly editing. I've always been fascinated by space exploration and advanced transportation, which I've leaned into by interviewing luminaries in those fields while closely following the dimensions of policy and regulation that allow next-generation projects to succeed -- or, sometimes, to fail. I'm also keenly interested in the effects of generative AI on society, policies, and democratic institutions, as well as clean energy, physics and biology, and the vagaries of tech leadership. My work for Futurism has been cited by publications including Ars Technica, Gizmodo, PC Magazine, Jalopnik, Fox News, and the New York Post. I spent my childhood living in locations including Manila, the Philippines, and Geneva, Switzerland, attended McGill University, and now live in Toronto, Canada. Before Futurism I worked at AskMen and a small photography studio. In my free time, I'm an avid gardener, foodie, and craft beer lover, as well as a maker of artisanal hot pepper sauces. I have a magnificent dog named Freida.
