## Costume Party

NASA has [officially set](<https://blogs.nasa.gov/commercialcrew/2020/09/28/nasa-and-spacex-update-target-launch-date-for-the-crew-1-mission-to-station/>) the date for SpaceX's long awaited Crew-1 mission to the International Space Station for 2:40 am EST on October 31. A SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft will take off on top a Falcon 9 rocket from Launch Complex 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

Crew-1 will mark the first time that an international crew will fly aboard a commercially-owned and operated rocket and spacecraft from American soil, according to NASA.

## NASA Certified

The announcement follows the [successful completion](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/spacex-crew-dragon-demo-2-splashdown>) of Demo-2, which saw NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley [successfully launch](<https://futurism.com/spacex-launches-astronauts-into-space>) from Cape Canaveral in May. The pair docked with the International Space Station about a day later, where they [spent the next two months or so](<https://futurism.com/nasa-astronaut-spacex-crew-dragon-looked-awesome-spacewalk>).

The crew of four scheduled to launch on Halloween includes NASA astronauts Michael Hopkins, Victor Glover, and Shannon Walker. They will also be joined by Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)'s Soichi Noguchi. The group will spend six months on the ISS.

## Leak Check

In July, NASA [also announced](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/nasa-announces-crew-2-spacex-crew-dragon>) the four crew members for the Crew-2 mission, which is scheduled to launch in the spring.

According to NASA's statement, the agency is still planning to take the time before launch to go "conduct additional testing to isolate the station atmosphere leak if required." On August 20, NASA [kicked off an investigation](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/weeks-later-nasa-cant-find-hole-leak-space-station>) into a small air leak aboard the station, noting that none of the crew members were in immediate danger.

## Author
I've been at Futurism since 2017, where my role has evolved to encompass design, writing, and increasingly editing. I've always been fascinated by space exploration and advanced transportation, which I've leaned into by interviewing luminaries in those fields while closely following the dimensions of policy and regulation that allow next-generation projects to succeed -- or, sometimes, to fail. I'm also keenly interested in the effects of generative AI on society, policies, and democratic institutions, as well as clean energy, physics and biology, and the vagaries of tech leadership. My work for Futurism has been cited by publications including Ars Technica, Gizmodo, PC Magazine, Jalopnik, Fox News, and the New York Post. I spent my childhood living in locations including Manila, the Philippines, and Geneva, Switzerland, attended McGill University, and now live in Toronto, Canada. Before Futurism I worked at AskMen and a small photography studio. In my free time, I'm an avid gardener, foodie, and craft beer lover, as well as a maker of artisanal hot pepper sauces. I have a magnificent dog named Freida.
