## Tesla Semi

According to a [leaked email obtained by *Reuters*](<https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-to-start-volume-production-of-semi-trucks-memo-2020-6>), Elon Musk has ordered the company to bring its commercial semi truck into "volume production."

The news comes after the carmaker [resumed production](<https://futurism.com/defying-shelter-in-place-tesla-building-new-cars-today>) after a forced lockdown during the growing coronavirus outbreak.

"Production of the battery and powertrain will take place at Giga Nevada," Musk wrote in the email*,* referring to the company's Gigafactory 1 in Nevada.

According to Tesla's Q3 2019 earnings report, Tesla's Semi was anticipated to be produced in "limited volumes" in 2020, as [*Electrek* reported](<https://electrek.co/2019/10/23/tesla-semi-electric-truck-production-limited-volume-2020/>) at the time.

## Truckla

The company first revealed its Semi during a flashy [announcement event in November 2017](<https://futurism.com/spacex-launch-zuma-spacecraft-today>). The truck will allegedly be able to rocket from 0 to 60 in [25 seconds](<https://www.tesla.com/en_CA/semi#:~:text=25%20sec,475%20or%20800%20kilometers>), even with a load — something that takes your average diesel truck [a whole minute](<https://bgr.com/2017/11/20/tesla-semi-acceleration-sound-video-0-60/>) — and carry 80,000 pounds for 500 miles.

The driver's seat inside the futuristic cockpit is centered, allowing for access to multiple touchscreens — not unlike the controls in the [Crew Dragon module](<https://futurism.com/spacex-crew-dragon-astronauts-dock-iss>) built by Musk's other venture, SpaceX.

Many companies have already placed orders for Tesla's semi truck, including [UPS](<https://futurism.com/ups-placed-order-125-tesla-semis>), [Walmart, Pepsi, and DHL](<https://futurism.com/category/advanced-transport>).

Other carmakers like Volvo have already [beaten Tesla to the punch](<https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/19/business/electric-semi-trucks-big-rigs.html>) by bringing fully electric trucks to the market.

## Author
I've been at Futurism since 2017, where my role has evolved to encompass design, writing, and increasingly editing. I've always been fascinated by space exploration and advanced transportation, which I've leaned into by interviewing luminaries in those fields while closely following the dimensions of policy and regulation that allow next-generation projects to succeed -- or, sometimes, to fail. I'm also keenly interested in the effects of generative AI on society, policies, and democratic institutions, as well as clean energy, physics and biology, and the vagaries of tech leadership. My work for Futurism has been cited by publications including Ars Technica, Gizmodo, PC Magazine, Jalopnik, Fox News, and the New York Post. I spent my childhood living in locations including Manila, the Philippines, and Geneva, Switzerland, attended McGill University, and now live in Toronto, Canada. Before Futurism I worked at AskMen and a small photography studio. In my free time, I'm an avid gardener, foodie, and craft beer lover, as well as a maker of artisanal hot pepper sauces. I have a magnificent dog named Freida.
