## Starship Payload

On Tuesday, Twitter user @justpaulinelol shared an [animation](<https://www.instagram.com/p/B5klrN0JjOR/>) of a SpaceX rocket launching a [Tesla Cybertruck](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/tesla-elon-musk-unveils-blade-runner-cybertruck>) into space.

"Cybertruck for the next Falcon Heavy payload @elonmusk?" they [wrote](<https://twitter.com/justpaulinelol/status/1204476152246685697>) alongside the clip — and then received a [reply](<https://www.inverse.com/article/61625-tesla-cybertruck-on-spacex-starship>) from Musk.

"Maybe on Starship?" [he mused](<https://www.inverse.com/article/61625-tesla-cybertruck-on-spacex-starship>). "It's def got the payload capacity…"

## Not so Crazy

The idea might sound ridiculous, but it wouldn't be the first time a SpaceX rocket launched with a Tesla as its payload. In 2018, the very first Falcon Heavy to reach space brought a [Tesla Roadster](<https://futurism.com/worst-case-scenario-space-roadster>) along for the ride — and the car has since [orbited the Sun](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/spacex-starman-roadster-orbited-sun>) and traveled [nearly a billion miles](<https://www.whereisroadster.com/>).

If Musk did send a Cybertruck into space, it also wouldn't be the first time something he seemingly off-handedly tweeted about actually came to fruition. After all, the first we heard about his [Boring Company startup](<https://futurism.com/elon-musk-just-released-breakthrough-updates-about-his-new-company>) was a [series of tweets](<https://futurism.com/elon-musk-to-eliminate-traffic-im-going-to-build-a-machine-and-just-start-digging>) he shared about wanting to dig tunnels beneath Los Angeles to avoid its notorious traffic.

## Timing Is Everything

SpaceX is currently targeting a [2020 maiden launch](<https://www.spacex.com/starship>) for Starship. Tesla is expected to [begin production](<https://ww.electrek.co/2019/12/06/tesla-cybertruck-production-timeline-update-orders/>) on the Cybertruck in 2021, so it would likely need to use a prototype if it wanted the vehicle to be the payload for the first flight.

The publicity from the stunt could be a great way to drum up [additional preorders](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/elon-musk-cybertruck-pre-orders-250000>) just prior to the truck's launch, though. And bonus: Musk wouldn't have to worry about the vehicle hitting any [traffic cones](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/elon-musk-cybertruck-restaurant-traffic-cone>) in space.
