## Hype Beast

Elon Musk's artificial intelligence startup xAI is set to release its first AI model to a select group of users as soon as Saturday, the mercurial CEO [said in a tweet today](<https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1720372289378590892?s=20>).

And since Musk is no stranger to [overpromising](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/elon-musk-promises-tesla-full-self-driving-again>), he's claiming his that startup's AI is "the best that currently exists."

But whether that'll actually turn out to be true remains to be seen — and given his spotty track record on timelines and tech promises, he has a lot to prove.

## Killing Woke

Musk has long been invested in the space, having cofounded OpenAI eight years ago. In 2015, he [quit](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/elon-musk-quits-research-group>) the company over disagreements with the group's direction, [tweeting](<https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1096989482094518273>) back in 2019 that "it was just better to part ways on good terms."

Any chance of maintaining those good terms went out the window when Musk [went on a tirade](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/elon-musk-pissed-openai-successful>) earlier this year, [arguing that](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/elon-musk-building-ai>) companies like OpenAI are actively censoring their models and giving in to the "woke" demands of the left — while *also* risking an evil algorithm running amok.

In response, Musk took matters into his own hands. In April, the entrepreneur announced he was building a "maximum truth-seeking AI" in an [interview](<https://www.foxnews.com/video/6325259104112>) with far-right commentator Tucker Carlson on *Fox News*, designed to "understand the true nature of the universe," per the [company's official website](<https://x.ai/>). Its name? Apparently "[TruthGPT](<https://futurism.com/elon-musk-building-truth-seeking-ai>)."

## Free-est Speech

What any of this actually means or whether it'll make his startup's AI any more successful than OpenAI's already uber-popular chatbot is still unclear at best.

But given his [disastrous leadership](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/brands-horrified-twitter-ads-nazi-posts>) at Twitter, now known as X, where he's doubled down on his [own flawed interpretation](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/elon-musk-social-network-mocked>) of "free speech," there's a good chance we won't see the kinds of guardrails OpenAI has been implementing to keep its AI models from pumping out [problematic](<https://futurism.com/neoscope/chatgpt-advice-cancer-patients>) [material](<https://futurism.com/hack-deranged-alter-ego-chatgpt>).

There's still a lot we don't know about xAI's upcoming AI model, oviously. But claiming it'll be the "best" AI in the world is one heck of a claim that not only sets the bar as high as it goes, but also smacks of Musk's archetypal hubris.

## Author
I've been at Futurism since 2017, where my role has evolved to encompass design, writing, and increasingly editing. I've always been fascinated by space exploration and advanced transportation, which I've leaned into by interviewing luminaries in those fields while closely following the dimensions of policy and regulation that allow next-generation projects to succeed -- or, sometimes, to fail. I'm also keenly interested in the effects of generative AI on society, policies, and democratic institutions, as well as clean energy, physics and biology, and the vagaries of tech leadership. My work for Futurism has been cited by publications including Ars Technica, Gizmodo, PC Magazine, Jalopnik, Fox News, and the New York Post. I spent my childhood living in locations including Manila, the Philippines, and Geneva, Switzerland, attended McGill University, and now live in Toronto, Canada. Before Futurism I worked at AskMen and a small photography studio. In my free time, I'm an avid gardener, foodie, and craft beer lover, as well as a maker of artisanal hot pepper sauces. I have a magnificent dog named Freida.
