## Burn One Down

It's official: 30,000 people were dumb enough to purchase Tesla CEO Elon Musk's "Burnt Hair" meme perfume for $100 a pop — and now, he's claiming it's "sold out."

As Musk [announced](<https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1582582042063093760?s=20&t=-KrLPYDovJK_py6ZhNfQTA>) late last night, The Boring Company, his tunnel digging venture, had completely sold out of the "exquisite" perfume that is, [per its creator](<https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1582547658039623680>), a "unique, limited edition, collector's item."

Like many other products Musk [has launched](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/tesla-naughty-short-shorts>) in the past, "[Burnt Hair](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/elon-musk-burnt-hair-perfume-sales>)" is a mix of memes and fanboyism. At the end of September, the world's richest man [tweeted what appeared to be a joke](<https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1574895951973449729?s=20&t=UiutGZ26YSB07iofVXI2xQ>) about a "scent for men" that smelled of burning hair.

Between then and now, the joke became real enough for the Tesla and SpaceX CEO to sell an astonishing 30,000 bottles.

But Musk's fans will have to wait until they are able to make themselves smell like a dumpster fire. According to [The Boring Company's website](<https://www.boringcompany.com/burnthair>), the repugnant scent won't be released until the beginning of 2023.

## GoFundElon

Surrounding the whole goofy gambit is [Musk's on-again](<https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-10-04/musk-proposes-to-proceed-with-twitter-deal-at-54-20-a-share?sref=YfHlo0rL#xj4y7vzkg>) Twitter buy.

"Please buy my perfume, so I can buy Twitter," he [tweeted](<https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1580304724082843648>) last week.

Given that this isn't the first time Musk has sold "joke" items — first with the "[Not-A-Flamethrower](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/sentence-elon-musk-flamethrower>)" sold through The Boring Company and later with his [Tesla-branded short-shorts](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/tesla-naughty-short-shorts>) — we have no trouble believing that the perfume will actually materialize, for better or worse.

## Author
At Futurism, I've often been drawn to unpacking the narratives that underlie technological, scientific and medical progress, with a special interest in areas of conflict and ambiguity that end up setting agendas and steering the fates of both elites and the hoi polloi. I'm a committed generalist, but I often find myself returning to work involving NASA and the private space sector, the effects of AI on media and society, and the mechanics of the pharmaceutical industry, with a specific focus on the spread of GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy. Prior to Futurism, I worked for publications ranging from Media Matters and Truthdig to Raw Story and Bustle. I'm also the author of "Myspace Scene Queens," a 2024 title in Instar Books' acclaimed "Remember the Internet" series. My work at Futurism has been cited by outlets including the New Yorker, Slate, Nieman Lab, the Verge, the MIT Technology Review, the Sunday Times, and the Daily Beast. I grew up in North Carolina, attended the University of North Carolina at Asheville, and now live in Brooklyn, New York. In my free time, I'm an avid reader and music fan; you can probably find me at a local poetry reading, concert, underground rave, or DJ set. I'm the proud parent of an ineffable orange cat named Mee-Mow.
