## MSRNC

Fresh off his [explosive public foray](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/donald-trump-ignoring-elon-musk>) into American politics, SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk is now posting about buying *MSNBC*.

Responding to misread reports that [Comcast plans to put](<https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cn42p1m3jmno>) the liberal news network up for sale — when in reality, the broadcaster plans only to spin *MSNBC* and other brands off [into a separate company](<https://apnews.com/article/comcast-cable-spinoff-cnbc-msnbc-0d012a413e6dd863966f8d7aa0a9624d>) — Donald Trump, Jr. tagged his [famous new friend](<https://www.newsweek.com/elon-musk-trump-family-photo-election-1981895>).

"I have the funniest idea ever!!!" the president-elect's son said in a clear, if joking, reference that the politician scion thinks Musk should buy his [father's least favorite news network](<https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/111491888930107081>).

"How much does it cost?" the billionaire asked.

Not long after that exchange, podcaster Joe Rogan also glommed onto the idea.

"If you buy *MSNBC* I would like Rachael Maddow’s job," the notoriously anti-scientific podcaster [tweeted in response to Musk](<https://x.com/joerogan/status/1860088921264390462>). "I will wear the same outfit and glasses, and I will tell the same lies."

## History Repeating

While there's no indication of anything beyond trolling as of yet, the billionaire did, notably, give a similar response years before buying Twitter.

After Musk posted in December 2017 that he [loved the site](<https://x.com/elonmusk/status/943901463998169088>), *Fortune* magazine reporter Dave Smith retorted that the Tesla and SpaceX owner "[should buy it then](<https://x.com/redletterdave/status/943901848167104512>)."

"How much is it?" [Musk responded](<https://x.com/elonmusk/status/943902052542849024>).

In that case as in this one, neither property is actually up for sale — but when you're as rich as Musk, that doesn't seem to matter.

Should he choose to take the president-elect's son up on his joking exhortation, however, the billionaire may run into [even more hurdles](<https://abcnews.go.com/Business/timeline-elon-musks-tumultuous-twitter-acquisition-attempt/story?id=86611191>) than he had to jump to buy Twitter — including shoring up his finances after that disastrous purchase, which [wiped out the social network's value](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/elon-musk-twitter-value-2-years>) and [screwed those that invested](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/banks-elon-musks-twitter-screwed>) in the takeover.

## Author
At Futurism, I've often been drawn to unpacking the narratives that underlie technological, scientific and medical progress, with a special interest in areas of conflict and ambiguity that end up setting agendas and steering the fates of both elites and the hoi polloi. I'm a committed generalist, but I often find myself returning to work involving NASA and the private space sector, the effects of AI on media and society, and the mechanics of the pharmaceutical industry, with a specific focus on the spread of GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy. Prior to Futurism, I worked for publications ranging from Media Matters and Truthdig to Raw Story and Bustle. I'm also the author of "Myspace Scene Queens," a 2024 title in Instar Books' acclaimed "Remember the Internet" series. My work at Futurism has been cited by outlets including the New Yorker, Slate, Nieman Lab, the Verge, the MIT Technology Review, the Sunday Times, and the Daily Beast. I grew up in North Carolina, attended the University of North Carolina at Asheville, and now live in Brooklyn, New York. In my free time, I'm an avid reader and music fan; you can probably find me at a local poetry reading, concert, underground rave, or DJ set. I'm the proud parent of an ineffable orange cat named Mee-Mow.
