## Focus on Climate

Tesla CEO Elon Musk [told *Fortune*](<https://fortune.com/2021/01/25/exclusive-elon-musk-tells-fortune-hes-super-fired-up-about-biden/>) on Friday that he's very excited for Joe Biden's presidency — and there's one big reason why: Biden's concerns over climate change.

"I’m super fired up that the new administration is focused on climate," Musk told *Fortune*.

## Liberate Texas

The CEO's endorsement for a more left-leaning administration is somewhat surprising considering Musk's [dismissal](<https://www.cnbc.com/2019/09/27/tesla-violated-labor-laws-by-blocking-union-organizing-judge-rules.html>) of Tesla workers' attempting to unionize, significant donations to Republican candidates — and [his love for Texas](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/elon-musk-moved-to-texas>).

During the early days of the pandemic, Musk [repeatedly sided with Trump](<https://futurism.com/musk-trump-coronavirus-twitter>) when it came to the country's response to the growing pandemic, calling lockdown measures a violation of people's rights and freedoms.

Musk was also undecided on who to vote for in September, describing his stance as "socially very liberal, and then economically right of center, maybe, or center" in a [*New York Times* interview](<https://www.google.com/url?q=https://www.nytimes.com/2020/09/28/opinion/sway-kara-swisher-elon-musk.html?showTranscript%3D1&sa=D&ust=1611593902309000&usg=AOvVaw2FdaSH8VhZjSgj_jsKvaMx>) at the time.

## Climate Optimism

But the White House has a new president and Musk is more hopeful than ever about the environment.

"I think this is great," he told the magazine. "I feel very optimistic about the future of sustainable energy with the new administration. Not that we should get complacent or anything, but the wind is at our back for solving the climate crisis with the new administration."

The SpaceX CEO has sided with environmental policies in the past. Musk [notably quit](<https://futurism.com/5-elon-musk-to-resign-from-trump-government-if-u-s-withdraws-from-paris-climate-agreement>) the Trump administration advisory boards in 2017 after Trump announced the [US was withdrawing](<https://futurism.com/its-official-trump-just-withdrew-the-u-s-from-the-paris-climate-agreement>) from the Paris Climate Agreement. In his first days in office, Biden made moves to [rejoin the agremeent](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/biden-rejoin-paris-climate-agreement>).

"My team, being very pro-environment, they know a lot of people that Biden is bringing in," Musk told *Fortune*, adding that "we will do our best to be helpful to the new administration with respect to climate."

## Author
I've been at Futurism since 2017, where my role has evolved to encompass design, writing, and increasingly editing. I've always been fascinated by space exploration and advanced transportation, which I've leaned into by interviewing luminaries in those fields while closely following the dimensions of policy and regulation that allow next-generation projects to succeed -- or, sometimes, to fail. I'm also keenly interested in the effects of generative AI on society, policies, and democratic institutions, as well as clean energy, physics and biology, and the vagaries of tech leadership. My work for Futurism has been cited by publications including Ars Technica, Gizmodo, PC Magazine, Jalopnik, Fox News, and the New York Post. I spent my childhood living in locations including Manila, the Philippines, and Geneva, Switzerland, attended McGill University, and now live in Toronto, Canada. Before Futurism I worked at AskMen and a small photography studio. In my free time, I'm an avid gardener, foodie, and craft beer lover, as well as a maker of artisanal hot pepper sauces. I have a magnificent dog named Freida.
