# Elon Musk Says Cybertruck Will Be Able to “Drive Diagonally Like a Crab”

## Crab Mode

Tesla CEO Elon Musk is finally ready to talk Cybertruck, his most beloved pet project.

"Cybertruck is intentionally an insane technology bandwagon," he wrote in [a tweet](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/elon-musk-cybertruck-insane-technology-bandwagon>) earlier this week.

And today, Musk spilled the beans on yet more details.

"Will have both front and rear wheel steer, so not just like a tank," he [wrote](<https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1466798760030351372>). "It can drive diagonally like a crab."

## Motor Mouth

Interestingly enough, that's exactly how General Motors is selling its much-hyped and directly competing all-electric Hummer SUV, which is slated to [have its own "Crab Mode](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/watch-hummer-ev-crab-walk-video>)."

Musk also expanded on the first available variant of the Cybertruck, which will likely roll off the lot early next year thanks to [production delays](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/tesla-scrubbed-cybertruck-prices>).

"Initial production will be 4 motor variant, with independent, ultra fast response torque control of each wheel," Musk [dished](<https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1466798224187006983>).

With four independent motors, the most expensive flagship Cybertruck is bound to be a powerhouse. So far, Tesla has only [officially advertised](<https://electrek.co/2021/10/15/tesla-removes-cybertruck-specs-prices-from-website/>) a tri-motor variant with over 500 miles of range, zero to 60 mph in a blistering 2.9 seconds, and a starting price of — [sorry ](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/elon-musk-coincidence-starship-stack-420>)— $69,900.

The company was also advertising two cheaper variants featuring single and dual motor configurations.

The exact specs of the truck, however, appear to still be up in the air. In October, Tesla [scrubbed the Cybertruck details](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/tesla-scrubbed-cybertruck-prices>) and prices from its website.

Whether that means the four motor variant will be more powerful or more expensive than the tri-motor variant is still unclear. Those who pre-ordered the tri-motor variant will, however, be able to upgrade to the four motor version, [according to Musk](<https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1466800979098148870>).

Given that "early 2022" is just around the corner, we'll likely be hearing a lot more about Tesla's first Cybertruck.

"Product roadmap update on next earnings call," Musk [tweeted](<https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1466800941269667841>) — which would mean [January 26](<https://www.nasdaq.com/market-activity/stocks/tsla/earnings>).

So for now, fans will have to contend themselves with a [child-sized version](<https://futurism.com/tesla-cybertruck-atv-child-sized>) of the truck's little brother ATV, the Cyberquad.

## Author
I've been at Futurism since 2017, where my role has evolved to encompass design, writing, and increasingly editing. I've always been fascinated by space exploration and advanced transportation, which I've leaned into by interviewing luminaries in those fields while closely following the dimensions of policy and regulation that allow next-generation projects to succeed -- or, sometimes, to fail. I'm also keenly interested in the effects of generative AI on society, policies, and democratic institutions, as well as clean energy, physics and biology, and the vagaries of tech leadership. My work for Futurism has been cited by publications including Ars Technica, Gizmodo, PC Magazine, Jalopnik, Fox News, and the New York Post. I spent my childhood living in locations including Manila, the Philippines, and Geneva, Switzerland, attended McGill University, and now live in Toronto, Canada. Before Futurism I worked at AskMen and a small photography studio. In my free time, I'm an avid gardener, foodie, and craft beer lover, as well as a maker of artisanal hot pepper sauces. I have a magnificent dog named Freida.
