## Cheapest Tesla

Tesla [recently increased](<https://twitter.com/cybrtrkguy/status/1445701203279499278>) the price of its Model 3 and Model Y, with prices starting at a respective $54,990 and $41,990 before incentives.

Strangely enough, that makes the entry level [Cybertruck](<https://futurism.com/tags/cybertruck>), a much bigger vehicle starting at $39,990, the cheapest Tesla customers can order today, as [*Teslarati* points out](<https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-cybertruck-cheapest-price/>). Even the Model 3 Standard Range Plus variant, which is the second cheapest vehicle in the lineup, starts at $42,000 now.

"Cybertruck is officially the cheapest Tesla you can buy," one Twitter [user commented](<https://twitter.com/cybrtrkguy/status/1445701203279499278>). "I love this simulation."

## Delays

It's unclear if Tesla is still planning on revise the pricing for the much-delayed pickup truck. Last month, Tesla CEO Elon Musk confirmed that the rollout was going to be delayed to late 2022, a disappointment for those who preordered it for a $100 deposit [almost two years ago](<https://www.theverge.com/2019/11/22/20977320/tesla-cybertruck-preorder-how-to-buy-online-price-date-electric-truck-pickup>).

Tesla has also been struggling to keep up production of its new 4680 battery cells, which will end up powering the Cybertruck, according to [a July update](<https://electrek.co/2021/07/26/tesla-update-4680-battery-cell-production/>).

Musk said during the [company’s second-quarter earnings call](<https://www.rev.com/blog/transcripts/tesla-inc-tsla-q2-2021-earnings-call-transcript>) in July that each truck could "[literally cost a million dollars](<https://futurism.com/elon-musk-cybertruck-million-dollars>) a piece or more. There’s a reason why you do things at volume production, which is to get the economies of scale that get the cost down."

So whether that $39,990 entry-level price will stick once the first Cybertrucks are delivered to customers remains to be seen.

## Author
I've been at Futurism since 2017, where my role has evolved to encompass design, writing, and increasingly editing. I've always been fascinated by space exploration and advanced transportation, which I've leaned into by interviewing luminaries in those fields while closely following the dimensions of policy and regulation that allow next-generation projects to succeed -- or, sometimes, to fail. I'm also keenly interested in the effects of generative AI on society, policies, and democratic institutions, as well as clean energy, physics and biology, and the vagaries of tech leadership. My work for Futurism has been cited by publications including Ars Technica, Gizmodo, PC Magazine, Jalopnik, Fox News, and the New York Post. I spent my childhood living in locations including Manila, the Philippines, and Geneva, Switzerland, attended McGill University, and now live in Toronto, Canada. Before Futurism I worked at AskMen and a small photography studio. In my free time, I'm an avid gardener, foodie, and craft beer lover, as well as a maker of artisanal hot pepper sauces. I have a magnificent dog named Freida.
