## Lobbing Softballs

During Tesla's long-awaited Cybertruck [delivery event](<https://twitter.com/i/broadcasts/1ZkKzjaBdmLKv>), a mumbling CEO Elon Musk took the stage — well, he climbed into the bed of the truck, where there was no lighting and he was shrouded in darkness — while an infant sobbed loudly in the background.

When it comes to the pickup truck's windows, which Musk [claimed to be "bulletproof"](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/tesla-shows-off-bulletproof-cybertruck-breaks-window>) during the company's unveiling just over four years ago, we're still not convinced.

Chief designer Franz von Holzhausen, who infamously [shattered one of the truck's windows](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/tesla-shows-off-bulletproof-cybertruck-breaks-window>) at the time by lobbing a metal ball at it, took the stage today to give it another shot.

Except that it wasn't exactly a fair comparison. Von Holzhausen halfheartedly lobbed a baseball — rather than a heavy metal ball, like last time — at the Cybertruck's window during today's event. The ball harmlessly bounced off the truck, proving nothing.

In other words, until we see evidence to the contrary, Tesla has seemingly given up on making its truck's glass "bulletproof."

Musk muttered that the truck's windows would be "rock proof," which could arguably be said about plenty of other cars' windows. At the end of the day, it all depends on the rock.

As for the truck's heavy and difficult-to-bend stainless steel body panels, those will resist bullets effortlessly, as Tesla was happy to demonstrate in a clip.

In short, it was anticlimactic and astonishingly unrehearsed event, with a noticeably absent-minded Musk struggling to inject some excitement following four long years of waiting.

"It's going to be amazing to see all these cars driving around," he said.

## Author
I've been at Futurism since 2017, where my role has evolved to encompass design, writing, and increasingly editing. I've always been fascinated by space exploration and advanced transportation, which I've leaned into by interviewing luminaries in those fields while closely following the dimensions of policy and regulation that allow next-generation projects to succeed -- or, sometimes, to fail. I'm also keenly interested in the effects of generative AI on society, policies, and democratic institutions, as well as clean energy, physics and biology, and the vagaries of tech leadership. My work for Futurism has been cited by publications including Ars Technica, Gizmodo, PC Magazine, Jalopnik, Fox News, and the New York Post. I spent my childhood living in locations including Manila, the Philippines, and Geneva, Switzerland, attended McGill University, and now live in Toronto, Canada. Before Futurism I worked at AskMen and a small photography studio. In my free time, I'm an avid gardener, foodie, and craft beer lover, as well as a maker of artisanal hot pepper sauces. I have a magnificent dog named Freida.
