##### The Breakthrough

The team was able to send and receive quantum information over 62 miles of fiber. The team was able to achieve this using single-photon detectors cooled to one degree above absolute zero. Although only 1 percent of photos make it all the way through all the way, the new molybendum silicide detectors were significantly better at detecting weak signals.

##### The Implications

Quantum computing not only could be the start of a new era of computing, but the researchers behind this project also believes that this fiber-optic specific finding could be applied to a "quantum internet" that can send messages security. Previously, quantum teleportation was achieved over a span of 144 kilometers, but that passed the information through the open air. Fiber optics is far more feasible for quantum teleportation applications.
