A technique called [foveated rendering](<http://uploadvr.com/nvidia-smi-siggraph-foveated-rendering-eye-tracking/>), which tracks eye movements, will soon be integrated in the next generation of virtual reality (VR) headsets. This means even better graphics in lower cost hardware!

Eye trackers allow computers to optimize the flow of images you see by rendering more detailed images in the area where your eyes are currently focused.

Graphics processing company NVIDIA will be showcasing it latest development in foveated rendering using an eye tracker from [SensoMotoric Instruments](<http://www.roadtovr.com/a-pocket-guide-to-foveated-rendering-from-smi/>) (SMI), a well-reputed company delivering reliable eye trackers that can keep up with the fastest eye movements.

NVIDIA, which recently built a new [3D virtual reality headquarters](<https://futurism.com/nvidia-is-creating-a-new-headquarters-in-virtual-reality>), conducted rigorous studies of what people see in their peripheral vision. “Our researchers then used those insights to design a new rendering algorithm that enables much greater foveation, or reduction in rendering effort, without any discernible drop in visual quality,” NVIDIA Vice President of Research [David Luebke](<http://uploadvr.com/nvidia-smi-siggraph-foveated-rendering-eye-tracking/>) said.

A preview of this collaboration will be available at next week’s SIGGRAPH computer graphics conference in Anaheim.
