# Mitsubishi’s New Vehicle Warning Signals Are Projected Onto the Road

Japanese car company Mitsubishi has announced its new [Safe and Secure Lighting system](<http://www.mitsubishielectric.com/news/2017/1010-a.html>), which utilizes a mixture of symbols projected on road surfaces and electronic car displays to signal vehicle warning signals, movement and actions. For example: if a driver is backing up, the system projects a series of large illuminated arrows, signaling the backward movement to pedestrians and other vehicles. The system also can inform pedestrians and bicyclists when a vehicle occupant is opening a door, a welcome feature for the [rising cycling community](<https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=newssearch&cd=2&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwirxOjb0-fWAhUKcCYKHUkGBUMQqQIIKigAMAE&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.metro.us%2Fnews%2Flocal-news%2Fnew-york%2Fciti-bike-50-millionth-ride&usg=AOvVaw2XNTCZgmGhIaa9NJ5m62NJ>). This system could also be a precursor to a [new set of signals](<https://futurism.com/ready-set-go-audis-cars-can-let-you-know-when-a-stoplight-will-turn-green>) for autonomous vehicles to help them integrate into modern roads, which will have a mixture of traditional and autonomous vehicles. Signaling what moves the cars intend to make could help reduce future accidents between self-driving cars and conventional drivers.
