# Japan Completed the World’s Largest Floating Wind Turbine Last Week

![](<https://futurism.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/fukushima.jpg>)

- Japan needs alternate sources of power because the country took all of its nuclear reactors offline following the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in 2011.
- The turbine's goal is to see whether wind power is commercially feasible as an alternative to nuclear or fossil fuels.
- The floating turbine is anchored to the seabed by four 20-ton anchors. If a large wave were to jostle the floating wind turbine, the loose chains have enough slack to move without damaging the wind turbine.
