## Final Destination

A six-month-long journey that could shape the future of humanity reached its nail-biting conclusion today.

On May 5th, NASA [launched](<https://futurism.com/new-mars-lander-launch>) its InSight Mars lander from California's Vanderberg Air Force Base. On Monday afternoon, following "[seven minutes of terror](<https://www.theguardian.com/science/2018/nov/26/seven-minutes-of-terror-as-nasas-insight-probe-descends-to-mars>)," the craft reached its final destination — [Elysium Planitia](<https://www.nasa.gov/image-feature/jpl/pia22232/insight-s-landing-site-elysium-planitia>), a flat plain near the Red Planet's equator — where it will now spend the next two years conducting scientific research focused on the planet's interior.

## Everybody's Talking

InSight's efforts have the potential to teach us valuable information about the [formation of rocky planets](<https://mars.nasa.gov/insight/mission/overview/>) in our solar system. They could also inform our plans to one day visit, and perhaps [colonize](<http://now.northropgrumman.com/nasas-insight-mars-lander-could-gather-vital-data-for-colonization/>), the Red Planet.
