These images are brought to you by the various satellites that were in operation at the time of the 9/11 attacks, which took place on September 11th, 2001 (13 years ago today). Some of these images were taken by astronaut Frank Culbertson, who was abroad the International Space Station (ISS) at the time of the attacks, and the two Russian cosmonauts who were also stationed on the ISS. You can hear Frank's story here.

Few can forget where they were on that day.

It was a day that dramatically altered the course of the future and led to immeasurable suffering. The war the followed plunged many into dark times. However, it may be of some comfort to know that, as this tragedy was unfolding, there were three men orbiting some 250 miles (400 km) above the Earth. They were put there by cooperation, determination, and a desire to set aside differences in the name of science and progress.

So perhaps these images, which depict such a terrible tragedy, can simultaneously give us hope for the future.
