• IBM’s Green Horizon project researchers have developed an AI program that predicts air quality for areas, with the resolution of a kilometer, in Beijing. The system uses great amounts of data from the Beijing Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau and “adaptive machine learning.”
  • The AI can forecast 3 days ahead and researchers hope to expand to forecast up to 10 days in advance. They’re also intend to add models for tracking where pollution comes from and how to best combat that output.
  • The average amount of pollutants (airborne particulates) in China’s air is over two and half times the World Health Organization’s prescribed levels. Each year, about 1.6 million deaths in China can be connected to the poor air quality, according to a UC Berkeley study.
