The Weather Company
Last week, IBM announced that it was entering into an agreement to acquire the digital assets of the Weather Company. IBM is not disclosing the specifics of the acquisition, but The Wall Street Journal is putting the deal at over $2 billion. The deal itself will not include The Weather Channel, which will continue to be operated by NBCUniversal. This acquisition is touted as a move towards big data and analytics.
The most valuable of part of this acquisition is the cloud-based mobile app that comes pre-installed in millions of iPhones around the globe. According to IBM, the weather app is the fourth most used mobile in the United States with 26 billion inquiries to its cloud-based services each day. As artificial intelligence in mobile computing continues to grow, the move to acquire these assets are seen as preparation to capitalize on Watson, IBM’s cognitive computing arm.
