• According to documents obtained by the Guardian, Google Auto was formed in late 2011 to modify and test the driverless Lexuses that Google has been experimenting with for the past few years. It’s named as the manufacturer of all 23 self-driving Google cars registered in California.
  • Google Auto is also the company that applies for international vehicle identification numbers (VIN). Google doesn’t seem keen on building its own cars — recently, Urmson has said the optimum situation for Google is to find a manufacturing partner and said in a letter that Google Auto doesn’t plan on offering any of its vehicles for sale.
  • It’s worth noting that Google’s other moonshot experiments don’t always get their own companies. Google Glass and Project Ara don’t have their own subsidiaries, for instance.
