If there's one thing the rising surveillance dragnet has exposed throughout North America, it's that cops really don't like to taste their own medicine. In fact, the experience drove police employed by the town of Milner, Georgia to resign in tandem in late October, after their boss admitted to tracking the police chief's work truck during an investigation.

According [to local channel ](<https://www.wsbtv.com/news/local/georgia-mayor-admits-tracking-police-chiefs-vehicle-entire-full-time-police-force-resigns/JLUDDOPMBNEOJG572TOQNJI5Y4/>)*[WSBT-TV Atlanta](<https://www.wsbtv.com/news/local/georgia-mayor-admits-tracking-police-chiefs-vehicle-entire-full-time-police-force-resigns/JLUDDOPMBNEOJG572TOQNJI5Y4/>)*, Milner Mayor Craig Timmons called a last-minute city council meeting to distribute copies of an investigation report containing allegations that the police chief was committing some sort of payroll fraud. Basically, Timmons alleged that police chief Lamar Bunn was not working the hours indicated on his time sheets.

In addition to tracking his truck, Timmons told local reporters he'd set up a surveillance camera pointed at the chief's office.

"The mayor's position is not just shaking hands and kissing babies," Timmons quipped.

To retaliate against the mayor and signal their support for Bunn, the entire department tendered its resignation on the spot, something Milner told *WSBT* he did not anticipate. The police chief denied the allegations, saying that it's "very common" for Milner officers to work off-hours as well as outside the city.

Regardless of the validity of the investigation, the mass-resignation exposes the hypocrisy of Georgia police, who have access to perhaps the largest public-private surveillance operation in US history. As the home of controversial surveillance company Flock Safety, the state of Georgia has [nearly 10,000](<https://flockcameralocations.com/locations/georgia>) automatic license plate readers in operation, which are increasingly used by police departments throughout the country to surveil civilian movement without probable cause.

Whether Bunn committed the offenses alleged by Timmons is perhaps beside the point — if officers can use surveillance devices to [track civilian movement en masse](<https://futurism.com/future-society/cops-nonsense-reasons-flock.md>), then it stands to reason that police officers themselves should be subjected to the same kind of scrutiny.

The incident in Georgia comes after a related debacle in Canada. There, a civilian built his own kind of mobile license plate reader, which was setup to only [track law enforcement vehicles](<https://futurism.com/future-society/police-upset-flock-camera-alpr-surveillance-canada.md>). The police weren't happy with the contraption, though — going so far as to confront the system's engineer on his doorstep.
