Ahead of the deadly airstrikes and military raid that saw US troops kidnap Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and deputy to the National Assembly Cilia Flores, Donald Trump was reportedly in the throes of a [weeks-long mind meld](<https://futurism.com/artificial-intelligence/trump-grok-venezuela.md>) with Grok.

Elon Musk's [notorious generative AI chatbot](<https://futurism.com/future-society/grok-violence-women.md>) had evidently convinced the president that he would be hailed as a hero for kidnapping the elected officials — a claim reinforced by widespread [AI-generated misinformation](<https://futurism.com/artificial-intelligence/venezuela-maduro-ai-misinformation.md>) on social media following the attack.

Trump's murderous assault on Caracas was successful, at least by the standards Grok cooked up. Now, however, the president's obsession with the chatbot is becoming a major liability, as Democrats in the House judiciary and oversight committees demand the president's chat logs be preserved for investigation.

In a letter addressed to Trump, [viewed by *Politico*](<https://www.politico.com/news/2026/10/29/trump-democrats-grok-oversight-01140089>), Democratic representatives Jamie Raskin and Robert Garcia pressed the president to preserve "any prompts" given to AI chatbots like Grok while "carrying out your constitutional, statutory, or other official or ceremonial duties." Any response from AI chatbots are likewise expected to be preserved.

The letter asks for a briefing on the president's use of large language models for executive decision making by November 11. According to *Politico*, the letter was triggered by reporting of Trump's reliance on Grok to plan the January 3 attack on Caracas, which [killed 100 people](<https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/venezuelas-interior-minister-says-100-people-died-us-attack-2026-01-08/>) and left parts of the city [in ruins](<https://futurism.com/future-society/trump-venezuela-research-institution.md>).

Specifically, Raskin and Garcia charged that Trump used Grok to "opine on how Venezuelans would respond to the capture of President Nicolás Maduro." Based on the bot's response, they say, Trump then "ordered the US military, without congressional authorization, to attack Venezuela and capture President Maduro."

How cooperative the notoriously churlish White House will be under Trump's second term remains to be seen.

In a statement shared by *Politico*, a White House official said that the "White House preserves all required records in accordance with the law" — though there's no telling whether Trump will delete the logs himself following Grok's advice.
