For decades, gaming console emulators have allowed tech-savvy users to play their favorite games on officially unsupported devices.

While the trend has broadly been confined to older-generation consoles like the Nintendo 64 or GameBoy, hackers are now starting to get even games exclusive to current-generation hardware, like Sony's PlayStation 5, to run on a PC.

Thanks to rapid advancements in emulator tech, PS5 titles are becoming increasingly playable on virtually any modern PC, as [*Ars Technica* reports](<https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2026/10/ps5-emulation-is-suddenly-making-big-strides-on-pc/>).

Videos making the rounds on social media show PS5 games, [like "Dead Cells](<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=anOHF5aPzwk>)," comfortably running "fully natively" on a PC thanks to a new project called AnyPS5, which has been making major strides.

While it's presumably only a matter of time until Sony will come after the project and try to shut it down, the stakes are considerable. We're just weeks away from the release of "Grand Theft Auto VI," likely the most anticipated video game launch of all time, which will come out on current-gen consoles only. Developer Rockstar has yet to reveal an official PC release date for the game.

Users on social media are celebrating AnyPS5's recent progress, highlighting gamers' already strained relationship with Sony, a company that has lost much of its goodwill with longtime fans. Sony [reiterated earlier this year](<https://www.cnet.com/tech/gaming/sony-is-reminding-us-again-that-we-dont-own-our-playstation-games/>) that digital games are "licensed" and not "sold," effectively telling its customers that they don't actually own their games. The company also [announced](<https://www.cnbc.com/amp/2026/07/22/sonys-playstation-disc-decision-threatens-a-7-billion-resale-market-.html>) that it would completely stop producing physical PS game discs in 2028, angering many in the gaming community.

"Sony just needs to start getting used to not owning its console," one Reddit user wrote in [response](<https://www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/comments/1wwxm35/comment/pdomosv/>) to the latest AnyPS5 progress news.

"This project is like a piracy moonshot for the GTA 6 launch. And i think they might just about make it," [wrote](<https://www.reddit.com/r/digitalfoundry/comments/1wr7ie1/comment/pcj1zib/>) another.

While some emulators, like SharpEmu and KytyPS5, take the traditional route of using homebrewed software to coax software into running on an unsupported system, AnyPS5 is taking a different approach.

Instead of acting like a traditional emulator, AnyPS5 translates a PS5 title's game code into instructions that can be read by any computer using the outdated but once ubiquitous 32-bit processor architecture x86.

As [*TweakTown* reports](<https://www.tweaktown.com/news/113923/ps5-games-running-natively-on-pc-edge-closer-as-tool-hits-96-percent-shader-coverage/index.html>), AnyPS5 now supports roughly 96 percent of its tracked PS5 GPU shader instructions. Put differently, it's making extremely fast progress towards of the goal of allowing any PS5 game to run "[natively](<https://x.com/RedGamingTech/status/2107073401068130747>)" on a PC. Just last week, it was at a mere 50 percent.

"By avoiding emulation altogether, AnyPS5 can potentially eliminate some of the computational overhead, resulting in a smoother experience," [*Tom's Hardware* explains](<https://www.tomshardware.com/video-games/playstation/open-source-anyps5-dumps-emulation-to-run-playstation-5-console-games-natively-on-pc-amd-zen-2-architecture-enables-proton-like-binary-translation-for-windows-and-linux>).

While we still aren't at the point where any PS5 game can run on a PC, it's looking like it might only be a matter of time — and that could bode badly for companies betting on the release of GTA VI. At the same time, it could be a major source of hope for gamers who feel like they've continuously been taken advantage of by unaffordable hardware and console exclusives who shut out the most ubiquitous gaming platform of all.

*Updated to remove a reference to Dead Cells being a PS5 exclusive.*

I've been at Futurism since 2017, where my role has evolved to encompass design, writing, and increasingly editing. I've always been fascinated by space exploration and advanced transportation, which I've leaned into by interviewing luminaries in those fields while closely following the dimensions of policy and regulation that allow next-generation projects to succeed -- or, sometimes, to fail. I'm also keenly interested in the effects of generative AI on society, policies, and democratic institutions, as well as clean energy, physics and biology, and the vagaries of tech leadership. My work for Futurism has been cited by publications including Ars Technica, Gizmodo, PC Magazine, Jalopnik, Fox News, and the New York Post. I spent my childhood living in locations including Manila, the Philippines, and Geneva, Switzerland, attended McGill University, and now live in Toronto, Canada. Before Futurism I worked at AskMen and a small photography studio. In my free time, I'm an avid gardener, foodie, and craft beer lover, as well as a maker of artisanal hot pepper sauces. I have a magnificent dog named Freida.
