Noted "[sociopath](<https://futurism.com/artificial-intelligence/sources-sam-altman-sociopath.md>)" Sam Altman lied about running into actor Andrew Garfield — if Garfield himself is to be believed.

In an [interview](<https://www.vanityfair.com/story/sam-altman-exclusive-interview-part-1>) with *Vanity Fair* last month, Altman was asked about Garfield's portrayal of him in the trailer for the [upcoming Luca Guadagnino-directed biopic](<https://www.avclub.com/artificial-review-openai-sam-altman-luca-guadagnino-andrew-garfield-elon-musk>) "Artificial." He praised Garfield for nailing his appearance and mannerisms down to his distinct gait, which made for an all the more uncanny encounter when, Altman claims, he saw Garfield filming outside his house.

"I felt I was in some weird glitch of the simulation or something," he said.

Then Altman claimed he actually had a brief interaction with the British actor.

"We waved and went on, but it was really weird," Altman said.

This is all news to Garfield, however, who says he never even laid eyes on Altman.

"No, I saw that interview and I replayed it a few times to try and discern what he was actually saying, because I was very confused by that. I never had any interaction with him," he said in a [new *GQ* interview](<https://www.gq.com/story/andrew-garfield-men-of-the-year-2026-cover-interview>). "I've never seen him in real life."

It's true that they were shooting outside Altman's house, but Garfield says the production was told he wasn't home at the time.

Strangely, Altman is doubling down on his story. His representatives passed the message along to *GQ* that "Altman was home during the filming and reiterated that he waved at Garfield."

Someone is clearly lying here, and while we don't have hundreds of billions in investor money to blow, our money's on Altman. A colossal *New Yorker* [investigative piece](<https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2026/04/13/sam-altman-may-control-our-future-can-he-be-trusted>) on Altman in April cited multiple people close to him who described him as a relentless liar and, we quote, a literal "sociopath," characterized by a "lack of concern for the consequences that may come from deceiving someone."

Altman, the reporting detailed, was fired by his own board partly because his constant deception caused them to doubt that he could safely develop powerful AI models. If Altman was willing to lie about all that, then a little fib about meeting Garfield wouldn't even register on his Richter scale.

## Author
At Futurism, my work has often centered on bringing a sense of clarity and insight to complex topics ranging from the regulation of emerging technologies to the esoteric ideologies of Silicon Valley executives, while striving not to lose the poetic sense of awe inspired by often-obscure fields like astrophysics and quantum computing. I broke the story of CNET using AI to produce articles that turned out to be riddled with factual errors and plagiarism — a dam-breaking inflection point, as I've reported, that's inspired copycats and endless discourse while beguiling stakeholders ranging from tech giants to purveyors of spam around the web. My work at Futurism has been cited by publications including CBS News, the Los Angeles Times, Vice, Gizmodo, Engadget, the Verge, and Vanity Fair. I grew up in locales ranging from India to China, and now live in the exotic suburbs of Virginia. In my free time, I'm an avid reader of weird sci-fi literature, an aficionado of East Asian cinema, and, regrettably, a relapsed gamer. Allegedly, I’m working on a debut novel, currently untitled.
