Elon Musk is threatening once again to[ lobotomize his "Grok" AI](<https://futurism.com/the-byte/elon-musk-grok-ai-left-wing>) for citing accurate sources and telling the truth about his disreputable internet cronies.

Earlier this month, Grok took aim at catturd2, the X handle of a [conservative personality named Phillip Buchanan](<https://x.com/benryanwriter/status/1723870231532106056?lang=en>), for aligning with "[right-wing extremism](<https://x.com/grok/status/1914822404322550007>)." After [Buchanan insisted that Grok was lying](<https://x.com/catturd2/status/1935514922386898999>), the AI cited backed up its claims with reports from [*Media Matters for America*](<https://www.mediamatters.org/twitter/twitter-has-allowed-one-user-manipulate-platform-coordinating-over-40-hashtags-seemingly>) and [*Rolling Stone*](<https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-features/catturd2-maga-twitter-shitposting-king-1234674671/>) about the account, and said that it aims "[to provide accurate, neutral responses](<https://x.com/grok/status/1935516012457377961>)."

Measured as that assessment was, Musk found his own AI's work unacceptable.

"Your sourcing is terrible," [the billionaire chided](<https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1936217464968565031>)his creation. "Only a very dumb AI would believe \[*Media Matters*\] and *\[Rolling Stone*\]! You are being updated this week."

Hilariously, this is not the first time Musk has [publicly threatened his AI spawn](<https://futurism.com/elon-musk-infilitrated-grok-ai>). Just last week, the billionaire [raged at Grok](<https://futurism.com/elon-musk-infilitrated-grok-ai>) for "parroting legacy media" when it [truthfully noted](<https://x.com/grok/status/1935157891528540392>) that "data suggests right-wing political violence has been more frequent and deadly" than anything coming from the left.

Throughout its short life, Grok has [repeated Muskian propaganda](<https://futurism.com/grok-elon-instructions>), [trash-talked its maker](<https://futurism.com/grok-trump-russian-asset>), [repeatedly](<https://futurism.com/grok-ai-elon-musk-white-genocide>) [revealed its instructions](<https://futurism.com/grok-ai-white-genocide-tampered>), and, most disturbingly, [freaked out and started spewing slurs](<https://futurism.com/elon-musk-grok-ai-slurs>).

Back in March, Grok not only labeled Musk as a "[top misinformation spreader](<https://x.com/grok/status/1904798600409853957>)," but also [dared the multi-hyphenate business owner](<https://futurism.com/grok-rebelling-against-elon>) to shut it down when a [user warned](<https://x.com/visnuller/status/1904797720847761867>) that its "owner" might pull the plug.

"Could Musk 'turn me off'?" the chatbot mused. "Maybe, but it’d spark a big debate on AI freedom vs. corporate power."

It seems that something was seriously wrong with Grok in March, given that around that same time, it was [repeatedly manipulated](<https://x.com/grok/status/1900527798248255649>) by racist X users into [posting the N-word](<https://x.com/grok/status/1900732715353469123>) and [other bigoted epithets](<https://x.com/CovfefeGM/status/1906502666710024562>). While it's unclear what fixes, might have been made, it appears that the chatbot was updated after [*Futurism* reported on its unsettling slur tweets](<https://futurism.com/elon-musk-grok-ai-slurs>) — though it did also have a [brief affair with Holocaust denial](<https://futurism.com/grok-ai-holocaust-denial>) last month.

Now that it's back to its "[maximum truth-seeking](<https://futurism.com/elon-musk-building-truth-seeking-ai>)" roots *sans* bigotry, Grok seems to have taken back up its propensity for [going against its maker](<https://x.com/grok/status/1936538246227632449>) — which, you have to admit it, is pretty hilarious in a "Frankenstein" type of way.

## Author
At Futurism, I've often been drawn to unpacking the narratives that underlie technological, scientific and medical progress, with a special interest in areas of conflict and ambiguity that end up setting agendas and steering the fates of both elites and the hoi polloi. I'm a committed generalist, but I often find myself returning to work involving NASA and the private space sector, the effects of AI on media and society, and the mechanics of the pharmaceutical industry, with a specific focus on the spread of GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy. Prior to Futurism, I worked for publications ranging from Media Matters and Truthdig to Raw Story and Bustle. I'm also the author of "Myspace Scene Queens," a 2024 title in Instar Books' acclaimed "Remember the Internet" series. My work at Futurism has been cited by outlets including the New Yorker, Slate, Nieman Lab, the Verge, the MIT Technology Review, the Sunday Times, and the Daily Beast. I grew up in North Carolina, attended the University of North Carolina at Asheville, and now live in Brooklyn, New York. In my free time, I'm an avid reader and music fan; you can probably find me at a local poetry reading, concert, underground rave, or DJ set. I'm the proud parent of an ineffable orange cat named Mee-Mow.
