As you’ll read in one of our articles later today, the Sun recently unleashed a massive solar flare. This flare was ‘Earth directed,’ meaning it would eventually impact our little planet. When this happens, down here, safe on the planet’s surface, we see the magical and majestic aurora as Earth’s magnetic field and atmosphere work in unison to protect us.
This image, taken by Greg Gibbs, is called “Aurora in the Alps” as was seen in Mount Buffalo National Park in Australia last night. In this image, you can also see the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, along with the dust band of the Milky Way.
