# Did Haley Stevens Use AI to Write Her Blog Post About Her Controversial Endorsement?

Last night, congresswoman Haley Stevens published a [blog post on X-formerly-Twitter](<https://x.com/HaleyforMI/status/2117442023682945033>) titled "The Decisions We Make." In the nearly-900-word post, the Michigan Democrat explained her [controversial decision](<https://www.nytimes.com/2026/11/01/us/politics/el-sayed-stevens-meltdown-michigan-democrats.html>) to endorse Republican Mike Rogers for Michigan's open Senate seat — rescinding her endorsement of the Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed, who had beaten Stevens in the Democratic primary several months earlier.

The Michigan race is among the most contentious midterm elections in the country and could play a pivotal role in tonight's fight for control of the Senate. Stevens' withdrawal of her support for El-Sayed in the race has prompted intense backlash from other Democrats who have accused her of betrayal, while many Republicans — including president Donald Trump — have [praised her](<https://time.com/article/2026/11/02/haley-stevens-abdul-el-sayed-mike-rogers-endorsement-trump-republicans-democrats/>) for crossing party lines.

Stevens [went on *CNN*](<https://www.cnn.com/2026/11/01/politics/video/haley-stevens-mike-rogers-detroit-elsayed-michigan>) in an attempt to explain the switch, but the interview backfired badly in what [one commentator called](<https://x.com/atrupar/status/2117080118736613535>) "one of the most bizarre and incoherent political interviews I can recall."

Stevens' blog post isn't landing the way she wanted, either. In it, the Michigan lawmaker attempts to set the record straight on a choice that, as she puts it, "has angered many Democrats." But it's not clear that Stevens even wrote it herself: according to the AI detector Pangram — which isn't perfect, though [independent testing has found it to be accurate](<https://www.nytimes.com/2026/08/13/technology/personaltech/pangram-ai-detector-test.html>) in the vast majority of cases — the missive is mostly AI-generated.

The piece includes [notorious AI-isms](<https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/2026/07/ai-chatbot-writing-tic-negative-parallelism/687892/>). The lengthy memo utilizes a variation on "it's not X, it's Y" framing, a now-classic hallmark of AI-generated content, with Stevens' piece describing something as "X dressed up as Y." It also leans heavily on the "[rule of three](<https://www.rule-of-three.co.uk/what-is-the-rule-of-three-copywriting>)," a [writing technique](<https://futurism.com/artificial-intelligence/new-york-times-accused-ai-article.md>) that chatbots frequently employ.

"Some critics have also dragged my fiancé into this, suggesting he or others must have made my decision for me. Think about what that says. A woman can serve in Congress, run statewide, and fight for her convictions, and still be told that when she makes a choice people dislike, someone else must be pulling the strings," reads the missive. "That is sexism dressed up as political analysis."

We ran the "The Decisions We Make" through the AI detector, which concluded that the text was likely 90 percent AI-generated. Others who [shared](<https://x.com/Biedersam/status/2117447805862383748>) Pangram analyses [online](<https://x.com/AlexanderMcCoy4/status/2117447609073988045>) drew similar results.

![A Pangram analysis finding that "90% of this text is AI"](<https://futurism.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/Futurism-Standard-19.png>)

We reached out to Stevens, but didn't immediately hear back.

AI use by politicians has drawn scrutiny as chatbots appear to be more and more popular among lawmakers. Earlier this year, [the *Washington Post* reported that](<https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2026/08/13/chatbots-are-doing-work-congress-with-little-oversight/>) an astonishing amount of legislation is now being written with AI, with little oversight. Lawmakers in the US and abroad have also been caught leaving AI text on their [websites](<https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/6162245-eric-pratt-ai-prompt-minnesota-2nd-district/>) and even in [speeches](<https://futurism.com/artificial-intelligence/politician-accidentally-reads-ai-slop-speech.md>).

At Futurism, I've reported extensively on the rise of AI as a cultural and business force shaping the media industry, and more broadly how those dynamics are changing how we all consume and share information and relate to one another. I'm also fascinated by public health policy and ethics, the role of emerging tech in politics and governance — and the powerful people and forces at those intersections — climate change, and the environment. My investigation on Sports Illustrated's use of AI-generated authors with fictional biographies won a 2024 Mirror Award for "Best Story on Media Coverage of Artificial Intelligence in Journalism and the Media" from Syracuse University's SI Newhouse School, I contributed to Niemen Lab's 2025 Predictions for Journalism series, and I've discussed my work for Futurism during appearances on NPR, CNN, the BBC, the CBC, and more. I grew up in rural Pennsylvania and attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where I played Division I field hockey for the Minutewomen as a midfielder. Since then, I've lived in New Orleans, Louisiana and Manhattan, New York. I spend my free time running, reading, perusing archival fashion, and searching for the world’s best negroni. I also have a debonair tuxedo cat, Westley, who's named after "The Princess Bride."
