Frontier AI lab Anthropic is officially gearing up to go public at a valuation of up to $2 trillion dollars — despite [having lost a stunning $80 billion](<https://futurism.com/future-society/anthropic-financial-situation-dario-amodei-ai-bubble.md>) in the first half of 2026 alone — in an unprecedented Wall Street debut that comes with a litany of inherent risks, as laid out in the [hundreds of pages of its IPO prospectus](<https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/2130357/000162828026067168/anthropicpbc-sx1.htm>).

And on top of major heat over the continued backlash to data centers across the country, lackluster infrastructure and not enough electrical power, and potential legal headaches involving the problematic use of its products, Anthropic put the "catastrophic or existential risks to humanity" its own products pose front and center.

It's a bizarre admission as the company looks to establish itself as potentially the most valuable AI company in the world, eclipsing even Elon Musk's SpaceX. Put simply, the IPO almost certainly marks the first time a company is trying go public by arguing its own existence could be the source of humanity's downfall.

According to Anthropic's documentation, the company repeatedly has to make "judgement calls" about the safety of its AI models. However, it argued that there is "no assurance" its own efforts will be enough.

"These judgments are particularly consequential because, as AI systems become more capable, the potential severity of harm from misaligned or misused models increases correspondingly, and a wide range of stakeholders, including researchers and policymakers, have raised concerns that sufficiently advanced AI systems could pose catastrophic or existential risks to society if not developed and deployed responsibly," the company wrote in its IPO filing.

"Our safety-focused approach is designed in part to mitigate such risks, but there can be no assurance that our efforts will be successful or that the broader AI industry will adopt similar safeguards," it added.

Put simply, even a company at the forefront of cutting-edge AI can't guarantee that the tech won't — as put by former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon [in an explosive statement earlier this year](<https://futurism.com/artificial-intelligence/anthropic-ai-researcher-quits.md>) when he quit in protest — "kill us all by the end of the decade."

The company has even gone as far as to [call for an industry-wide slowdown](<https://futurism.com/artificial-intelligence/trump-blundering-ai-slowdown-threaten-future.md>) in frontier AI model development, highlighting its continued efforts to paint itself as the more responsible alternative to competitors like OpenAI or SpaceX.

At the same time, it's not a stretch to [assume there are ulterior motives](<https://futurism.com/artificial-intelligence/secret-reason-ai-slowdown.md>) for both the slowdown and Anthropic's repeated warnings that AI poses "catastrophic or existential risks to society." After all, the company is actively selling itself to investors as the more trustworthy and perhaps stable player in the game.

Yet by its own admission, even Anthropic's approach to establishing safety guardrails and work on AI alignment may not be enough, making its IPO a surreal confidence test.

The Dario Amodei-led company is now trapped between a rock and a hard place. Move too fast and increase the risks of a catastrophe — or move too slow, causing the financial bottom to fall out.

"If the market for our models, platform, and applications develops more slowly than we expect or declines, our growth may slow or stall, and our business, financial condition, and results of operations could be adversely affected," the company wrote in its filing.

Especially once it's publicly traded at a potentially gargantuan valuation, Anthropic will have a lot to prove. Once the opening bell rings, the company will need to convince retail investors of two things at the same time: that it's capable of ensuring that AI won't destroy humanity and that it has a viable path to profitability.

Considering its extremely muddled messaging so far, that may end up being very difficult.

## Author
I've been at Futurism since 2017, where my role has evolved to encompass design, writing, and increasingly editing. I've always been fascinated by space exploration and advanced transportation, which I've leaned into by interviewing luminaries in those fields while closely following the dimensions of policy and regulation that allow next-generation projects to succeed -- or, sometimes, to fail. I'm also keenly interested in the effects of generative AI on society, policies, and democratic institutions, as well as clean energy, physics and biology, and the vagaries of tech leadership. My work for Futurism has been cited by publications including Ars Technica, Gizmodo, PC Magazine, Jalopnik, Fox News, and the New York Post. I spent my childhood living in locations including Manila, the Philippines, and Geneva, Switzerland, attended McGill University, and now live in Toronto, Canada. Before Futurism I worked at AskMen and a small photography studio. In my free time, I'm an avid gardener, foodie, and craft beer lover, as well as a maker of artisanal hot pepper sauces. I have a magnificent dog named Freida.
