# Approved: First Ever Human Trials Involving CRISPR Gene Editing

## Hello Cancer, meet CRISPR

CRISPR is the gift that keeps on giving—when it's not [fighting blindness](<https://futurism.com/crispr-used-to-repair-blindness-causing-genetic-defect-in-patient-derived-stem-cells>), [tackling HIV](<https://futurism.com/scientists-just-removed-hiv-human-immune-cells-using-crispr-gene-editing>), or even [recording real-time immune responses](<https://futurism.com/researchers-may-have-found-a-way-to-use-crispr-as-a-recording-device>), it is taking on the emperor of all maladies: *cancer*.

But what's even more fascinating about this use of CRISPR is that the National Institute of Health's (NIH) Recombinant DNA Research Advisory Committee (RAC) has approved the *[first-ever ](<http://www.nature.com/news/first-crispr-clinical-trial-gets-green-light-from-us-panel-1.20137?WT.mc_id=TWT_NatureNews>)*[use of CRISPR in human cancer therapy](<http://www.nature.com/news/first-crispr-clinical-trial-gets-green-light-from-us-panel-1.20137?WT.mc_id=TWT_NatureNews>), a monumental step in the history of *the* gene-editing technology.

While receiving funding from the [Parker Immunotherapy Foundation](<http://time.com/4291890/sean-parker-to-donate-250-million-to-cancer-immunotherapy-research/>), physicians at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine plan on working with the T-cells of 18 patients who have either melanoma, sarcoma, or myeloma by performing *three* distinct CRISPR edits:

1. **Offensive:** T-cells will be modified to have a gene that produces a protein that will help T-cells identify and target cancer cells.
2. **Removal:** T-cells will be modified so that they do not have a protein that is theorized to inhibit cancer cell identification and targeting.
3. **Defensive:** T-cells will have a gene removed, so that they will no longer produce a certain protein that identifies them as Immune T-cells, thereby preventing cancer cells from inhibiting them.

## An Approval to Remember

You may be scratching your head, thinking that approving this experimental therapy is a "no-brainer," but human gene therapy trials have been [bumpy since 1999](<http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC81135/>).

The story of Jesse Gelsinger echoes far too loudly with this team of physicians in particular—as Gelsinger was only 18 when he passed away in a University of Pennsylvania experimental gene therapy study. It was later discovered that members of the research initiative had hidden detrimental data from previous animal experiments as there was a financial stake involved in the success of the trial.

While a member of the current team is *believed* to hold ties to [Novartis, a pharmaceutical company that owns several T-cell technology patents](<http://www.xconomy.com/national/2016/06/21/fed-oversight-group-has-complaints-but-says-yes-to-crispr-trial/2/>), the scientific community is watching closely, and ensuring all precautions are taken.
