The Lagoon Nebula (otherwise known as NGC 6523, or Messier 8) is a stunning hub of star formation located around 5,000 light-years from Earth toward the constellation of Sagittarius.

Surely thousands of images of the Lagoon Nebula have been gathered over the years, but this one—taken by László Francsics—put the astrophotographer on the shortlist for astronomy photographer of the year (see other entries here, or see a larger image here).
