Planting Trees

UK-based startup Biocarbon Engineering plans to plant 1 billion trees per year with the help of drones. Fixed-wing drones will assess the area and create a 3D map, then multiple-rotor drones will shoot out seeds at specific locations. Once done, the fixed-wing drones will fly back to these locations to monitor their growth and will use the gathered data to assess the ecosystem and improve planting methods.

The Path to Success

Beyond planting trees, the startup plans to experiment with different environments and conditions that could hopefully improve their precision farming strategies for future projects. The startup has been given a €100,000 grant for winning “Best New Startup” at the Hello Tomorrow Challenge, and they have also made a commitment to plant trees on a plantation in South Africa.
